    Get to know Ash

    • Favourite horse?: Being a big fan of the jumps, Kauto Star is an obvious one to say. However, Buveur d’Air has a special place in my heart. I love incredibly talented hurdlers, and that’s what he was. He was so efficient over his obstacles, and the first year he won the Champion Hurdle was my first day at the Cheltenham Festival. He was a really nice horse.
    • Favourite trainer?: As many people will know, I’m Tony Carroll’s biggest fan. The sheer volume of runners and winners he has every year is very commendable, and he can improve horses at a rate of knots. Over jumps, I’m a big fan of Dan Skelton; he will be a champion trainer very soon. On the Flat, I think James Tate punches very well at the top level, and William Haggas is just a true horseman.
    • Favourite track?: Cheltenham obviously has a special place in my heart for many reasons. It’s the home of jumps racing, and I’ve been attending Prestbury Park for as long as I can remember. However, I love the beauty of Goodwood, and Sandown is one of my favourite viewing tracks. If I was to take a new racing fan to any track in the UK, Sandown would be top of my list.

    Horse Racing Tipster
    Ash is similar to Racing Gav in that he loves the sport of horse racing and that affection shows in his writing. Not every tipster has a 100% record when it comes to sports betting. However, Ash has a good success record and is another writer who likes to look past the favourites tag and goes for horses he genuinely believes have a good shot at winning.

    Favourite time of the racing year?
    For the jumps, the few months leading up to the Festival have to be best time of the year. Yes, the hype can get a bit too much at times, but trying to work out the handicaps and Graded contests in February is a puzzle worth doing. On the Flat, nothing quite beats the stretch between Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood because a lot of horses will do both meetings, and there’s also the King George and Eclipse to look forward to.
    Strategy to picking a winning horse?
    I’m a big form punter. Finding horses who have received a bit of leeway from the handicapper, or horses who have run into big improvers attracts my interest. But it’s all situational; sometimes one looks so unexposed that you have to back them.
    Biggest win to date?
    It’s hard to remember every single successful punt, but I had a pretty good day when Honeysuckle lost in the 2022 Hatton’s Grace Hurdle. I backed/tipped Teahupoo at 18/1, as well as Mighty Potter at 3/1 in the Drinmore Novices’ Chase. Irish Point was also put up at 18/1, and he came a head away from beating Marine Nationale in the Royal Bond Novices’ Hurdle. All three were in a trixie, and while it still paid nicely, it could have been one hell of a payday!
