A look at the Next Prime Minister Odds

Last Updated on 08/12/2025
Fact checked by: James Leeland

With the July 4 General Election over, the UK has a brand new Prime Minister with Sir Keir Starmer leading Labour into a new Government.

From a betting perspective, there should not be a General Election for five more years and Starmer should be in charge for the whole duration - although stranger things have happened haven't they? Do you remember Liz Truss?

Although there will not be any betting markets for a new Prime Minister, this page will inform you on what to expect in the next few years in terms of betting markets.

Odds On Next Prime Minister - What Happens Next?

Unless you have been living under a rock, you will know that the UK has a new Prime Minister in Sir Keir Starmer, so there are no betting markets available on who will be the next person to run the country.

The bookmakers got it right ahead of the July 4 General Election - although it did not take too much effort to be correct - as Labour ousted the Conservatives from Government by a majority.

Labour needed to win 326 seats in order to win the General Election, and they ended up with 412 altogether, so Sir Keir Starmer is now the Prime Minister of the UK.

There will be no betting markets available on who will be the next Prime Minister for the time being. If Starmer makes a huge gaffe or loses the backing of the public, that market will then reopen and odds will be placed on whether he will be replaced or not.

Until then, Starmer is the leader and we will see what happens further down the line.

The Next Prime Minister Betting Market

The General Election is over so there are no betting odds on who will be the next Prime Minister. Sir Keir Starmer will lead the country until he makes an error or cannot be trusted by the public. That sounds harsh, but it's true.

Voters turned out on July 4 to vote to help Labour oust Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives from power. The betting market surrounding General Elections and new Prime Ministers will be quiet for some time, although there will be plenty of interest on who will be the next leader of the Tory Party.

Odds Next Prime Minister - Is It Easy To Predict?

While there are no live odds available on the next Prime Minister, here at Betting.co.uk, we will briefly explain what would usually happen in the build up to a General Election in terms of online politics betting.

Predicting who the next Prime Minister will be can be easy or hard, and depends on a number of factors. For example, picking the next Prime Minister when a leadership contest is forthcoming is different from predicting a general election.

That is what happened that allowed Sunak to become Prime Minister. He won a leadership contest, this time he is in a General Election - meaning everyone can vote and not just Conservative voters.

Predicting PM Odds With Leadership Contests

Although this did not happen at the 2024 General Election, it is important to explain what a leadership contest is.

With a leadership contest, making a call just after the Prime Minister has left their post is almost impossible. As there are usually multiple candidates at this stage, the odds will be long and even the bookies won’t really be able to give you an indicator of who might win.

Once you get to the stage of the actual ballot though, there are only two candidates to choose from, so making your prediction is fairly easy. This is especially true for Tory leadership contests, as they haven’t served up many surprises in recent decades. By the time the vote comes close, it’s basically already known who will win.

For example, in the last Tory leadership election, Liz Truss beat Rishi Sunak with a clear majority. Labour leadership elections have tended to serve up more close calls and surprises. For example, in the 2010 Labour Party leadership election, Ed Miliband only narrowly edged out his brother, David Miliband, with 50.7% of the vote.

Jeremy Corbyn’s election in 2015, ultimately came as a surprise to many; however, his victory was easy to see coming due to the influx of party memberships. The bookies foresaw this and called it right, as Corbyn won with 59.5% of the popular vote.

Betting Odds Next Prime Minister - What Is The Best UK Bookie

We previously mentioned that most of the polls failed to predict the hung parliament in the 2017 election. The result of this was that Theresa May ultimately required the support of the DUP in order to form a government. While no polls managed to foresee this, the Betfair Exchange did. This was the only bookmaker that gave odds on a hung parliament as the favoured outcome.

While official polls, news and other sources are important, the bookies' odds can tell you a lot when it comes to UK politics. Whether it’s a party leadership election or a general election, it’s always worth taking a look at Betfair’s odds, as they have a good track record of calling things right.

As well as Betfair and Bet365, in the lead up to a General Election, you can also find odds on the next Prime Minister and UK politics at William Hill and Betfred. These are two highly-rated operators by our experts here at Betting.co.uk, and they have welcome offers that are worth checking out for new account holders.

How Competitive Are The Odds For The Next UK Prime Minister?

Normally when a Prime Minister calls for a General Election, he or she is fairly confident they have the voters and will remain in office. The recent General Election felt different.

Odds on the next Prime Minister would normally see the current leader being the favourite, but that wasn’t the case this time. Starmer was the overwhelming odds-on favourite with odds as long as 1/25 with some bookmakers.

Next Prime Minister Odds - The Summary

When it comes to betting on who will be the next UK Prime Minister, timing is key. Bet early on a party leadership contest and you will have a lot of candidates to choose from at long odds.

While there is potential value here, picking the right winner can be extremely difficult. Waiting until there are two candidates can make it easy to call, but the odds can end up shortening so much that a winning wager isn’t even worth your while.

Still, keep your eyes on the worlds of politics and bookies and you might get lucky. And remember, Betfair and Bet365 are the ones to watch when it comes to UK elections!

Next Prime Minister Odds FAQ

🗳️ When Will We Find Out Who The Next Prime Minister Will Be?

If everything goes the way Labour want it to, there should not be a change in leadership until the next General Election 2029. This could change if the public lose faith in Sir Keir Starmer or he makes an unforgivable error.

❓ Do I Have To Bet And Vote On The Conservatives Or Labour?

The party you vote and bet on is entirely up to you. The Conservatives and Labour are the two frontrunners when it comes to General Elections. You do not have to vote on them, but if you don't the chances of your selection becoming Prime Minister will be slim to none.
