What Is A Spread Betting Calculator And Its Purpose Of Use?

Our sports spread betting calculator allows you to input the point spread that you are betting on as well as the alternative spread. Once you have entered your numbers, the calculator will calculate it together and reveal the probability of winning as well as what you could potentially receive as a payout.

Our spread betting calculator allows you to compare one spread with an alternative spread to determine the overall value of the bet and give you a better indication of which one to select.

If you are betting on the NFL and the Kansas City Chiefs are -2, you can then use the alternative spread on the calculator to see if would be more beneficial to back -3. It works the opposite way as well. If you see a team available at +7.5, you can find out if it makes more sense to go with -7 instead. All this will be based on the probabilities.

All sports betting calculators are designed to make your life easier when it comes to betting on sports. It is hard enough deciding what market you are going to choose and which team you are going to back without trying to figure out complicated mathematical equations.

Although spread betting is very popular, it is also complicated to understand at first. Once you get a good understanding of how it works, it will be an important tool on your betting journey.

What Is Spread Betting?

To get the full benefits out of our spread betting calculator, you will need to fully understand what spread betting is, how it works and more importantly how you can make potentially money from it.

Spread betting is a very popular market when it comes to sports betting. Spread betting focuses more on the movement of a certain betting market rather than the eventual outcome of an event.

With regular sports betting you would be backing on the outcome of a game or a player winning the tournament. With spread betting you are placing a wager on a ‘spread’ of outcomes and the success of that bet comes down to whether or not you predict if the outcome is higher or lower than your selected spread.

In more simple terms, spread betting allows you to bet on a team’s final points score and whether it is higher or lower than the expected total. You are betting against the spread and not on the standalone result like you normally would. It works similar to a handicap bet.

Spread Betting Example

Using the 2024 Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers as an example, I will show you how spread betting works and what needs to happen for your bet to be successful.

On the spread market the odds before the game were as follows:

Kansas City Chiefs -3.5 @ 13/8 Bet365

San Francisco 49ers +3.5 @ 4/9 Bet365

The Chiefs will start the game with minus 3.5 and the Niners have a plus 3.5 points start. The Chiefs are the favourites for this game because they have the points deduction. For your bet to be successful you would need the Chiefs to win by four or more points.

This is an example of a two-way spread. That means there will be a .5 figure on the betting market to eliminate the possibility of a tie. If you bet on a three-way spread then it will be a whole number and there is a chance of a tie happening.

Main Purpose Of Our Spread Betting Calculator

The main purpose of any sports betting calculator is to make the bettors life easier. The sports spread betting calculator takes away any guess work from your bet and gives you a percentage of the probability of that bet winning.

By comparing your different spreads, the online sports spread betting calculator allows you to find the right bet for you. Using the odds above from the 2024 Super Bowl, you could compare the probability and fair lines numbers for Chiefs -3.5 and Chiefs -4, or the other way around with Niners +3.5 and Niners +3.

What Are The Terms Used In Spread Betting?

As I mentioned before at the top of the guide, you will hear different terms when you are exploring the world of sports spread betting. Here are a couple of them.

Cover The Spread

In sports betting, when you hear ‘cover the spread’ that means you have to win your points spread bet. A point spread is chosen by the bookmaker and they determine by how many points a team could win by. Punters will then wage their bets on who they think will win.

Betting Against The Spread

Betting against the spread is more commonly known as ATS. This is where you are backing the least favourite or the underdog to win with the spread. Your bet is successful if the underdog wins or loses by fewer points than the spread.

What Sports Are Used For Spread Betting?

There are a number of sports you can enjoy spread betting with as well as using the best betting offers and promotions with a number of sites. Here is a brief table with the most popular ones.

SportType of Spread Betting
American FootballBets can be placed on all NFL and CFL matches in America and Canada. They are mainly two-way spreads because a tie is rare.
FootballYou can bet on football matches from around the world including the Premier League, La Liga and Champions League. The most popular spreads are three-way ones because there is a high chance a game will end in a draw.
Ice HockeyAll NHL matches are covered and because of the overtime, these kinds of bets will always be two-way spreads like American Football.
BasketballYou can bet on every single NBA match, as well as the top European leagues and college games. Two-way spreads are again the most common.
Baseball Spread bets are available on all MLB matches, and like the majority of US-based sports they will be two-way spreads.

Sports Spread Betting Calculator FAQ

What Is Spread Betting?

A spread bet is the expected final score difference between two teams. Each team will have a number, one will be positive, and one will be minus depending on who is the favourite or the underdog. The team with the minus is the favourite and the team with the positive is the underdog.

What Is A Spread Betting Calculator?

Our spread betting calculator is mainly used for point spreads. The calculator will work out the potential payout you would receive from the bet you have placed, while it also helps you get the fair line price as well which is very important.

What Sports Use Spread Betting?

Sports that are mainly played in America like American Football, Ice Hockey, Basketball and Baseball use spread betting a lot because the majority of the time they are two-way wagers. Football, tennis, cricket and rugby can also be used, but they are not available on all bookmaker websites.
