Roger Federer Reflects on Centre Court | Wimbledon 2022

After being sidelined for more than one year due to a knee injury in the quarter-final exit from the Wimbledon Championships 2021, former World No. 1 and 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer made a surprise appearance at Wimbledon.

After losing in straight sets to Polish tennis ace Hubert Hurkacz, Federer had to undergo surgery to fix his knee. The tennis legend confirmed earlier that he would compete in the upcoming 2022 Laver Cup and 2022 Swiss Indoors, which will be held in the latter half of this season. He, however, made a surprise appearance at the Wimbledon Championships 2022 to mark his return.

Federer is an eight-time Men’s singles champion, a feat unmatched by any man. The only one who has been able to top his record is Martina Navratilova with nine titles.

Missing Wimbledon

Federer returned to the All-England Club ahead of the seventh day of this year's Wimbledon to attend Grand Slam's centenary celebrations. He spoke about how he missed the Centre Court. Currently, he is still recovering from the injury.

“I hope I can come back to Centre Court one more time. I miss being here,” the Swiss international said during the ceremony. “It feels awkward to be here today in a different type of role. I hope I can come back one more time.”

He then went on to discuss his knee injury, saying that it had troubled him since.

"I've been lucky enough to play a lot of matches on this court. It feels awkward to be here today in a different type of role," he said. "It's great to be here with all the other champions. This court has given me my biggest wins and my biggest losses.

“I knew walking out here last year it was gonna be a tough year ahead. I maybe didn't think it was going to take this long to come back. The knee has been rough on me. It's been a good year regardless of tennis. We're happy at home. I didn't know if I should make the trip, but I'm happy standing here right now."

The 100th anniversary of the main stadium of the Wimbledon Championships was also attended by other champions, including Venus Williams, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Billie Jean King, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Simona Halep as well as many other current and former champions.

Navratilova had to miss the event after testing positive for COVID-19.

Andy Murray makes joke on Federer's photo at Wimbledon

Federer's attendance caught the attention of fans, who welcomed the legend back to the scene. However, a photo of Federer was especially funny to the Scotland native Andy Murray. The photo, posted by Wimbledon on Instagram, shows Federer staring at a wall.

“Why is Roger Federer talking to the wall?” Murray asked.

His joke invited responses from fans, who highlighted how unmatched Federer was.

“Probably because he couldn’t find a legend of his own level,” an Instagram user said.

“Talking to the players better than him on grass,” another replied.

Meanwhile, other fans tried to apply logic in their answers to the joke.

“Maybe there’s a mirror there?” said one

“Because its a great wall,” said another.
