For all of you favourite backers out there, listen up! As I have 5 favourites that you shouldn’t be getting involved in with anyone's money for this year's spectacle and I would go as far as to say I think we can get all 5 of these beaten!
Dual Champion Hurdle winner Honeysuckle has been beaten on her last two starts and she owes us nothing in the racing world. I think it’s wise to put your feelings aside when it comes to punting, especially if you want to win some money. She has been an absolutely fantastic mare and won an incredible 9 Grade 1’s but there is reason to believe she is regressing this year and her price is almost based on her popularity and she will continue to receive support via sentimental bets meaning her price will only continue to shorten.
It seems like connections have given up on the idea of letting her try and win a 3rd Champion Hurdle and she drops back to take her chance in the mares despite the race being no given and evidently looking stronger than it has done in recent years. She will only get shorter on the day due to the support and in honesty, probably won't suit her style of racing at all. If she manages to get the win she will blow the roof of the Centaur at Cheltenham and there won’t be a dry eye in the house including mine but head over heart is where it matters when parting with the money and she is going to find this an incredibly tough ask stepping back up in trip.
The 370k purchase HERMES ALLEN, is the favourite for the opening race on day 2 of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival and he is one I will take on using your money and mine. He may look the part for now but typically has no turn of foot which is an essential asset you are required to have to win the Ballymore at Cheltenham as proven in the past. He is another runner from the Paul Nicholls yard that went down the Challow Hurdle route but surely is built to be a chaser and will do better when he jumps fences next year.
He’s big and scopey and if you put him alongside the likes of Good Land and Absolute Notions who ran in the Nathaniel Lacey he would have got spat out turning for home. I don’t think we will see the best of Hermes Allen until he steps up to 3 miles over fences and the 5/2 price tag here is of no value at all in my eyes. Plenty of potential behind him in the market screaming out with more value and Hermes Allen should be at least double the price to me.
The highlight race on day 2 of the Cheltenham festival is the Champion Chase where Energumene looks to try and retain his title but he is very one-dimensional to me and the two English horses in the betting, Edwardstone and Editeur De Gite are much improved individuals and fought out an epic Clarence House when they last met. Energumene is really going to need things his own way but this seems unlikely now and again with the ground looking to be on the better side of good to soft, it probably isn’t going to be in his favour from the get go. I thought at the beginning of the season that Energumene was almost an early-season banker for the Cheltenham meeting but he has been a little lacklustre this year and has a little bit to prove now. 13/8 is a bit skinny now.
Shishkin is absolutely full of talent but he seems to have a series of complications and for how good he is, always has your heart in your mouth whilst you're watching him. He stepped up to two and a half miles for the first time and it proved to suit him really well as he bolted up using his turn of foot, but do you really want to be backing a horse with his quirks at 4/6? I know I don’t. I guess what we do know about Shishkin is that he is definitely the best horse in this race but he is awful value at 4/6 taking all things into account. He could and should go and win this race but he is a very risky price with a small profit margin. Sit back, watch the race, and just enjoy it for what it is and what Shishkin is, a very talented horse!
The final horse that is worth laying at the Cheltenham Festival this year for me would have to be the Charles Byrnes runner Blazing Khal who will be well supported with all of those ones next to his name on the form sheet but he doesn’t come without his problems and I see him as a vulnerable contender here. Very impressive to win on his comeback after such a long time off the track, but I do have concerns about him at Cheltenham based on his price alone really. I have a few ahead of him in my own market and believe he will struggle to back up his latest performance and I also think that even that leaves him a little bit behind here. 5/2 is no value to me for his credentials and worth leaving alone for the highlight on day 4 of the Cheltenham Festival.
