This week, we have two more Tour events to turn our attention to, which encompass both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour. It could also turn out to be a very important week for those looking to gain themselves a spot on the Ryder Cup team for this year too.
The Italian Open will be played on the same course as the Ryder Cup this year, at the Marco Simone Golf Club. This is a trickily laid out track and it gives some likely candidates the perfect chance to impress Luke Donald in the hope of gaining a place on the home team.
This year’s DP World Tour has seen multiple new winners on the circuit, but this week I feel previous winners on Tour have the benefit in such a high-stakes tournament. I advise playing Win singles and EW doubles this week, to maximise every opportunity and hopefully, bring us a decent return.
Before you head off to check out this week’s golfing tips, you might want to consider the cracking deal that’s currently available from BetUK. They’re offering an unbelievable Bet £20 Get £60 in Free Bets bonus offer for new sign ups. Why not get ahead of the golf game and boost your bankroll?
My first pick for the Wells Fargo comes in the name of world number 14 Colin Morikawa. He has really started to come back to form of late and I think the track here at Quail Hollow will suit his style perfectly. He has a good long game but his Iron play is the standout for me, he controls the ball so well on his approaches to the green.
Colin was the Open Champion of 2021 and he could easily add a sixth PGA Tour title to his resume this week, making him look a great bet at 18/1. All he has to do is come in the right mood and carry on with his recent run of form and we could be on to a winner.
It’s been a bit of a mixed bag this year for Viktor Hovland. On two notable occasions this year, he has been a clear leader after the first round, before fading away in the closing stages. But aside from that, he has had numerous wins on Tour over the past three years and I think he will be able to add another to his tally this week.
He definitely has the game to suit this track and his regular top ten finishes scream a big shout at 20/1, especially as there are 10 places available this week. I think he is a solid choice to add to this week’s selections.
Tony Finau comes into this event off the back of a terrific performance last week, where he won the Mexico Open, beating this year’s Masters’ Champion, Jon Rahm, by three shots. He played out of his skin by shooting rounds of 65, 64, 65 and 66, which is just staggering golf!
He has already shown himself to be a bit of a money-maker on Tour, with consistent place finishes, so coming into this field off the back of a very dominating win, Tony Finau has to be worth a shot at 14/1.
Being such a model of consistency, I think adding him to the other two selections makes the three look very, very strong indeed heading into this event. No points for originality, but I think we have a big chance of landing in the money this week.
In a week where there is an opportunity to impress team captain Luke Donald on the Ryder Cup course here at the Marco Simone Golf Club, I have decided to put up some of the players I think deserve one of those sought-after spots.
Adrian Meronk is my number one for this. He broke his maiden last year by becoming the first Polish man to win on Tour and he did so in great style by winning the Irish Open. He is a huge hitter of the ball, incredibly long and that should really help him take advantage of this track.
I must admit, his short game has been a little ropey at times, but this has been countered by shots gained off the tee. He’s short enough at 20/1, but if Adrian puts his best foot forward and turns up with all guns blazing, he shouldn’t be far away.
Jordan Smith has been one of my favourite golfers to watch in recent years, largely because of his exciting style of play. Like Adrian Meronk, he also has a very good long game, which should benefit him greatly on the three Par 3 holes. Also, I would absolutely love Jordan to gain himself a spot on the Ryder Cup team.
He is currently attached to Bowood Golf Club, who have supported him for a long time and since coming through the EuroPro and Challenge Tour ranks, he has also managed to win himself two DP World Tour events on the way.
Jordan really came back to form at the Handa Championship two weeks ago and I think he would have had this event in mind for a while, so he should be able to give a really good account of himself here, especially with those Ryder Cup spots still open and ready to fill.
Frenchman Matthieu Pavon is yet to win on the DP World Tour, but in a year where we have been seeing loads of maiden victories, he could be ready to strike. His stats over the past three years on Tour have consistently improved and he is now hitting the ball on average 15yds longer off the tee and making more putts.
He has been playing some really good Golf this season, finishing close up in the SDC Championship and then playing well in the Handa the week after. It is all coming into place nicely for Matthieu and his fairway hit percentage is right up there with the best on Tour.
He is a very underestimated player who is exceptional value at 60/1. Having improved nearly every part of his game year on year and based on the level of ability his world ranking suggests, I think he should be shorter than that.
Sami Valimaki is another long hitter off the tee and as my final selection of the week makes the team of selections look even stronger. He has won on Tour already and he is one of those players that just attacks from the very first tee.
The players I have already tipped have a lot of credentials, but what I like about Sami is his ability to go low wherever he plays and even if he is a little off the pace, can absolutely fight back into contention.
When he gets on a birdie roll, he is hard to stop and his ability far outweighs his world ranking. He really deserves a second DP World Tour title and could easily prove he is up to mixing with the best out there this week.
