In this episode, I’m concentrating on Thursday’s racecards from Hereford and Wetherby. Just for a change, I’ve decided to put together a Lucky 31 for you and I think all of these horses should give us a decent run for our money.

With a strong weekend of racing ahead and the Aintree Grand National meeting coming up next week, I am hoping to bring us all some profit to play with by the end of today.

My Lucky 31 winning picks

3.45 Wetherby - Onesoc @ 6/1

My first Lucky 31 selection is Onesoc. He has had a fairly busy campaign over 2 mile races this year, with two wins, both coming at Southwell. Sue Smith his trainer is better known for training Stayers, but this boy is an out and out 2 miler and she’s done a great job with him.

When stepped up to 2m 4f, he found that too much, but dropped back to his perfect trip this time, he should be able to resume his progress. He carries a low weight, has shown plenty of gears previously and conditions are in his favour, so I expect a big run from him here.

4.20 Wetherby - Joanna Im Fine @ 9/2

Joanna Im Fine was heavily gambled when she won at Ayr last time out. She handled the trip nicely and she looks open to even more improvement on that last performance. She was pushed along a bit from three out, but stayed all day long and when she crossed the line, she still had a little bit in hand.

The yard is clearly expecting her to deliver the goods and I think we can expect another bold show here. She’s running off a low weight, only being put up 5lbs for that last win, so a repeat performance should be good enough to get the job done.

4.45 Hereford - Play By The Rules @ 2/1 (NAP)

My NAP selection is Play By The Rules, definitely benefitted from the application of cheekpieces last time out when bolting up at Taunton and winning by about 10 lengths. He actually looked a little bit of a tricky ride, but you can probably mark that performance up, as he is only a four-year-old and still learning on the job. Despite his rough looking ride, he actually travelled very well, always looked in command and was powerful through the finish line.

He looks to me like a horse going places and he really caught my eye. To win in that fashion, despite looking very green, it suggests to me that he only showed a shadow of what he may be capable of. He does get an 8lb rise for that win, but I really think he is the one to beat and I'll be very disappointed if he doesn’t get his nose in front here.

4.55 Wetherby - Mad About Sally @ 10/1

Mad About Sally has two very nice pieces of form to her name, clocking up wins at Hereford and Fontwell over 2m 5f. For her last run at Fakenham, she was stepped up to 3 miles and despite jumping poorly most of the way round, she was still only five lengths behind the winner.

Looking back at her previous runs, she is generally a very sound jumper, so her latest effort can probably be excused on the basis she still managed to finish so close. Providing she gets her jumping back together, which I think she will, she should go here with a real chance and the double-figure price is just too good to miss.

5.15 Hereford - Lump Sum @ 13/8

Sam Thomas has some really nice Bumper horses, and Lump Sum was very impressive when we last saw him in October. I’m not totally sure why we haven’t seen him since, but the fact he won so well on debut leads me to believe that Sam will have him ready to go first time out.

He does carry a penalty, but I think he can overcome this, as he does look like he has a bit of class about him. Let’s put it this way, if we have had a few winners up to this point, I’ll be more than happy for Lump Sum to take up leg five of our Lucky 31.
