  • Five BIG players, five BIG prices
  • Which one will shine on the tricky Augusta National course?

Welcome back to the channel golf fans!

It’s finally here, the first Major of the season and probably my favourite out of the four. The setting is Georgia and this year’s contest is played at the Augusta National over 7475 yards of golfing heaven, designed by the one and only Alastair Makenzie.

Now, this is an event where I don’t see a massive shock winner, as the course is incredibly unique and perhaps only St Andrews has more history. Experience is absolutely vital to play the Augusta National successfully. It’s definitely not a course where you can just turn up, play and expect to get a result. This is a challenge like no other!

Off the tee it generally suits a player with a right to left tee shot, but plenty of players that fade the ball have also won, so that’s not a stat I'm totally fixated on. However, what is extremely important for any player at Augusta is to have excellent distance control, as all of the contours generally slope away from the greens.

To keep the ball on the flat parts of the greens, you must be very accurate with your yardages. Naturally, the putter needs to be rocking all week as well, but it is largely the approach play that needs to be mastered here.

Ginger Joe’s bookie choice for The Masters

Before we go any further, you might want to take advantage of my exclusive BetVictor sign up offer, which is Bet £5, Get £30 in Free Bets. That’s a really cracking deal and you won’t find a better deal to get your Masters off to a flying start.

My winning picks for The Masters 2023

For this year’s event, I have five selections for you, which I’ll present to you in order of strength. In addition to these, I’ve also put up an ante post Lucky 15 covering all four Majors. Full details are in my video, but my selections include Justin Thomas at 20/1 for this event. But, without further ado, let’s get on to my best selections.

#1 XANDER SCHAUFFELE @ 20/1

World number seven, Xander Schauffele, is my strongest selection for this week's Masters and I think he has a great chance of winning his first Major here. He is a very well-rounded player, who seems unfazed by the occasion and generally finishes there or thereabouts wherever he plays.

He really has become a bit of a money-making machine on tour and he’s great value at 20/1. His best finishes so far in the Majors are a second place in the 2018 British Open and another second in the 2019 Masters. Since then he has just got better and better - surely it won’t be long until Xander breaks his Major maiden.

#2 HIDEKI MATSUYAMA @ 25/1

Next up on my list is 2021 Masters Champion and Japanese superstar Hideki Matsuyama, who has long been one of my favourite golfers out on Tour. He’s a very humble individual, who has his own style of playing, but that is most certainly not something to knock.

He has been at the top of his game for the last few years and is without doubt one of the best players on the planet. I mentioned last week that he could be coming into form just at the right time to try and win the second Green Jacket of his career. His price at 25/1 is huge for such a well-rounded player and he is never too far away here at the Masters. I’m expecting a really great effort from Hideki this week.

#3 TOMMY FLEETWOD @ 45/1

I also mentioned last week that Tommy Fleetwood seems to be playing well again and I think this could be his year to shine. He is the only Englishman in the field I fancy this week and he seems to be really enjoying his golf this season.

His start to 2023 has been nice and steady, with a combination of low scoring rounds. But even more importantly, not only has he has played very well, he’s been able to dig deep enough to hold on to his low score in moments of pressure. He is coming to the boil just at the right time and with a 45/1 price tag, he’s definitely worth backing to win the first Major of his career.

#4 VIKTOR HOVLAND @ 33/1

Sitting pretty in the world number nine spot is Norwegian Viktor Hovland, who has really cemented himself as a Top 10 world player. He is only 25 years old, but he has some seriously big ambitions.

Since winning the US Amateur in 2018, he has gone from strength to strength and could be about to break his maiden in the Majors, so he’s a huge temptation at 33/1. His best finish to date is in a T21 tournament, but he is getting better each year. He really shouldn’t be too far away this week at a course that should suit his game nicely.

#5 MAX HOMA @ 25/1

Here is another player that is rapidly become one of my favourite golfers to follow on tour. Max Homa really is becoming a class golfer and his swing is honestly, poetry in motion. He seems to be fine tuning it as he goes without making any drastic changes to his style and speaking as a golfer myself, that is not easy to do.

He won at the end of 2022 and started 2023 off by winning the Farmers Insurance Open, and then finishing second in the Genesis Open a couple of weeks later. He’s evidently hungry for more and definitely worthy of a punt at 25/1. I can see him making another big statement this week at the Augusta National.
