Unfortunately, I seem to have hit the crossbar rather than the goal for the last couple of days, but tomorrow is a new month and I’m more than ready to start over! And on that note, I have two very strong selections at Doncaster to get April off to a great start.

3.00 Doncaster: The Cammidge Trophy Stakes

My first port of call is the Trophy Stakes, which is a Class 1 Listed race over a straight 6 furlongs. There are some classy horses running here, but my pick is the ever-improving Asjad who has course and distance form and a brilliant record when fresh.

Most importantly, he enjoys a bit of cut in the ground, as proven by his two previous course and distance efforts. Both of his Doncaster runs last year were on soft ground. The first back in September, when he beat Mum’s Tipple and the second in October when he was denied by a short head to Dakota Gold.

Personally, I think he has even more to come now that he is beginning to mature a little. Currently, Asjad is sitting pretty as 7/2 Favourite, which is a great price for a horse with as big a chance as he has in this race.

3.35 Doncaster: The Lincoln Handicap

The Lincoln Handicap can be a tough nut to crack. It’s the first big race of the Flat season and there is never a shortage of promising runners. This year, there is the less-than-ideal ground to take into consideration as well.

However, it was a relatively easy choice for me this time around. Being a huge fan of the Charlie Hills and Jim Crowley combo, who always do especially well at Doncaster, I was drawn right away to Wanees, who is my 9/1 NAP for today.

He’s a cracking five-year-old, with plenty of improvement still to come. He was gelded last August, which really does seem to have been the making of him, as he ran a career-best at Haydock last time out, beating Montassib by almost a length.

Wanees always goes well fresh and is perfectly capable of running a good race on softer going. His connections are definitely in form and I think there’s sure to be a big performance on the cards.
