The Breeders’ Cup was founded back in 1984. The vision was simple, a World Championships style horse racing event at the end of the year, where the best compete against the best to produce champions.
For years before the Breeders’ Cup was born there had been debate around the world, across different eras and over different trips but this event would settle the question - Who really is the best horse?
Whilst bragging rights were on the line, there is an awful lot more at stake. Being a Breeders’ Cup winner can have a huge financial impact too. Firstly, as there is $34,000,000 in prize money up for grabs across the 14 championship races, with the pots varying from $1,000,000 through to $7,000,000. However, there is also the future breeding value of the horses competing on the line too.
The Breeders’ Cup rotates around different North American tracks rather than staying in one location. Last year it was at Del Mar, this year it is at Keeneland and next year they head to Belmont Park.
When is the Breeders’ Cup? I hear you ask - This year’s action at Keeneland takes place on Friday 30th October and Saturday 31st October 2026.
The Breeders’ Cup takes place over two days - The Future Stars Friday and the Championship Saturday.
The Friday consists of 10 races with an undercard of five races, followed by five 2-year-old championship races:
| Race | Prize Money | Post Time |
|---|---|---|
| Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint | $1,000,000 | 14:55 EDT / 18:55 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies | $2,000,000 | 15:35 EDT / 19:35 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf | $1,000,000 | 16:15 EDT / 20:15 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Juvenile | $2,000,000 | 16:55 EDT / 20:55 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf | $1,000,000 | 17:35 EDT / 21:35 GMT |
The Saturday then consists of 12 races with a shorter undercard of three races, followed by an incredible nine championship races:
| Race | Prize Money | Post Time |
|---|---|---|
| Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint | $1,000,000 | 13:10 EDT / 17:10 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint | $1,000,000 | 13:48 EDT / 17:48 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile | $1,000,000 | 14:26 EDT / 18:26 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf | $2,000,000 | 15:04 EDT / 19:04 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Sprint | $2,000,000 | 15:42 EDT / 19:42 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Mile | $2,000,000 | 16:20 EDT / 20:20 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Distaff | $2,000,000 | 16:58 EDT / 20:58 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Turf | $5,000,000 | 17:36 EDT / 21:36 GMT |
| Breeders' Cup Classic | $7,000,000 | 18:16 EDT / 22:16 GMT |
These races vary in distance from 5.5f sprints right through to 1m 4f and are run on a mixture of both turf and dirt, as the names suggest.
Please note, the above times are for the Championship races and on both days, the undercards start earlier.
The Breeders’ Cup aims to determine who is the best of the best and in order to do so, they need to first decide who are horses who deserve to be competing at the event.
There are three ways in which you can gain entry to the Breeders’ Cup and they are ranked in the following order:
With just 14 spots available for each of the Breeders’ Cup Championship races and just 12 in the Dirt Mile and Juvenile Turf Sprint, qualification to race is a big deal. All of this is to ensure the highest quality of races.
| Race Quality | Win | Place | Show |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 1 | 10 | 6 | 4 |
| Grade 2 | 6 | 4 | 2 |
| Grade 3 | 4 | 2 | 1 |
Many horses have won the same race at the Breeders’ Cup twice but only Goldikova has won a race three times - The Mile in 2008, 2009 and 2010. Beholder is also a three time winner at the Breeders’ Cup but across two different races - The Juvenile Fillies in 2012 and then the Distaff in both 2013 and 2016.
Seven horses in total have won two different Breeders’ Cup races - Zenyatta, Beholder, Secret Circle, Stephanie’s Kitten, Knicks Go, Golden Pal and Modern Games.
Only one horse has ever won the Classic twice and that was Tiznow in both 2000 and 2001, with winning margins of just a neck and a nose too! Zenyatta is the only mare to win the race. American Pharoah completed an unprecedented “Grand Slam” by winning the Classic after already landing the Triple Crown. The largest winning margin of the Classic goes to Flightline who won the 2022 renewal by 8.25 lengths.
The largest margin of victory recorded to date was by Inside Information in the 1995 renewal of the Distaff.
The United States lead the way in terms of volume of winners with 298 with Ireland and Great Britain trailing in second and third with 41 and 26 respectively.
Joseph O’Brien is both the youngest trainer (26) and youngest jockey (18) to win a Breeders’ Cup race. The oldest for both are D. Wayne Lukas (79) and Bill Shoemaker (56).

The five most successful jockeys in Breeders’ Cup history are:
European horses dominate the turf races, winning around half of the races in the last fifteen years and nearly two thirds of them in the last five years. However, the dirt races are dominated by the Americans with some exceptions such as Forever Young’s win for Japan in the 2025 Classic.
Aidan O’Brien and Bob Baffert produce plenty of the winners with the pair tied on 21 each as per the prior section. Aidan’s wins come on the turf whereas Bob is a real force on the dirt. There are then more specific trends such as Godolphin’s domination in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, winning four of the last five renewals with Space Blues, Modern Games, Master Of The Seas and Notable Speech.
Favourites win around a third of all Breeders’ Cup races. Whilst that would suggest there are plenty of big priced winners to be found, the top few in the market tend to dominate the winners’ enclosure. Shock results are still possible of course such as Arcangues in the Classic at 133/1 but are less likely than elsewhere.
Win and Each Way markets at horse racing betting sites are always popular, albeit in the US it is Win (1st), Place (1st or 2nd) and Show (1st, 2nd or 3rd)!
Antepost betting in the build up to a Breeders’ Cup is always popular too. However, whilst better prices are available, it doesn’t come without risk as if your horse doesn’t run, the bet loses rather than it being refunded.
With all of the best horses in the world competing at the same event over a two day period, multiple bets are often used, whether that be simply doubles and trebles or larger accumulators or bets such as a Lucky 15, Lucky 31, and Lucky 63.
In terms of pool betting, the UK Tote offers a UK hosted Placepot for the Breeders’ Cup. They also offer single leg pools for Win, Place, Exacta, Trifecta and also Quinella where available (not all tracks offer it).
The simplest angle when having a Breeders’ Cup bet is to focus on European horses for the turf races, especially over longer distances and the Americans when it comes to the dirt races.
With Aidan O’Brien and Bob Baffert leading the way on winners, it is very likely they will continue to produce Breeders’ Cup winners, so looking at their runners is another good place to start.
Of course there are all of the usual angles too such as recent form, the preparations and also the expected set up of the race. For example, if your horse is a strong finisher, you will be wanting a strong pace to aim at, as they would be unsuited by a race that develops into a sprint finish.
Ultimately it also depends on whether your goal is to back winners or to make money. The betting markets will give you a good steer on who is the most likely to win the race as will following those with strong last time out Grade 1/Group 1 form, which will likely be the same horses. However, the key to long term profitability is to find value in the markets i.e. horses who are available at a bigger price than they should be. So make sure you bear that in mind when betting on the Breeders’ Cup.
