There are a lot of horses for any July Cup betting tips to consider with 19 set to take their chance in the Group 1 Newmarket sprint. This historic and prestigious race that sees three-year-olds get 6lb weight for age from their elders headlines the Saturday card on the third and final day of the July Festival (16:25). Many are in with chances, so see which horses appeal most to our experts...
Ed Walker is still looking for a Group 1 winner as a trainer, but Starman may just be that horse. This lightly-raced four-year-old has a similar profile to last year's winner Oxted. Starman is a colt by sprinting sire Dutch Art and has four wins from five career starts.
He hit a hat-trick last autumn, scoring on the All-Weather in a Lingfield maiden, then took the step into novice company on his turf debut at Doncaster in his stride. Listed success followed for Starman at York. Although well-beaten on soft autumn ground on British Champions Day, he bounced right back on his reappearance.
That came in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes at the Dante meeting. He beat the re-opposing and aforementioned Oxted by 3 1/2 lengths into third that day. That one has since won the King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot. With plenty more improvement in the locker, it's Starman who appeals most at a standout 9/2 with Bet365 for Group 1 glory.
Plenty of three-year-olds fancy their chances here. While Royal Ascot handicap winner Rohaan commands respect, Dragon Symbol is out for compensation. Denied a nose by the David Evans gelding in the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock on his penultimate start, the younger of Archie Watson's runner was even more unlucky last time out.
Dragon Symbol was first past the post in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, but lost the race in a stewards enquiry. It was felt that he caused enough interference to stop American raider Campanelle from winning the race with just a head between the pair at the line. The decision to reverse placing was also upheld on appeal.
That left connections of Dragon Symbol feeling aggrieved. He runs here and is the apple of champion jockey Oisin Murphy's eye. All July Cup betting tips suggest Dragon Symbol is a major danger, and odds of 5/1 with 888Sport reflect that. Four three-year-olds have won this in the last six years too.
With so many runners having claims, Andrew Balding's improving mare Chil Chil could continue on her upward curve. What most July Cup betting tips don't highlight is that bookmakers pay extra places on this race. You can get fourth and even fifth in a bid to tempt you into taking a punt.
Chil Chil is a five-year-old daughter of Exceed And Excel owned by King Power Racing. After winning a handicap here on the Rowley Mile course, she made the step up into Group 3 company look easy at Newcastle. Similar improvement from the Chipchase Stakes is needed for this, but she may be capable of that.
While Silvestre De Sousa rides Art Power, also owned by King Power Racing, this in-form mare could hit the frame. She gets a 3lb sex allowance from the older colts and geldings, and that bridges some of the gap to the three-year-olds. Chil Chil is 16/1 with William Hill, who pay up to fifth provided there are a minimum of 14 runners, and an each-way play to consider.
