Piers Morgan’s Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup Wager Settles X Feud

Piers Morgan was left delighted after a World Cup wager involving Cristiano Ronaldo came up trumps. Before the World Cup, the TV host put his money where his mouth was by challenging content creator and talkSPORT presenter Rory Jennings to a wager that Ronaldo would score at this summer’s tournament.

Although Ronaldo fired a blank in Portugal’s opening group game, a stuttering 1-1 draw with DR Congo, the 41-year-old talisman grabbed a double against Uzbekistan. In doing so, Morgan proved Jennings wrong, and he was quick to gloat.

Origins of the debate

In the run-up to the World Cup, Jennings appeared on a Ladbrokes preview show posted on X alongside fellow talKSPORT presenter Jamie O’Hara and Mark Wright. Jennings was adamant Ronaldo would struggle at what is likely to be his last major international tournament for Portugal.

When pressed for his thoughts on how Ronaldo might fare, Jennings said:

“I think Ronaldo will be a flop though, because I think this is going to be portrayed as being his swansong, his time with Portugal and to finally get over the line.

“I think they’ll build it around him, and he won’t deliver. I don’t think Ronaldo will score a goal at this World Cup.”

At the time, his bold claim incurred a curious reaction from Wright, mocking Jennings for being a Messi fan. And Jennings was left to rue his remarks.

Morgan has the last laugh

Morgan is never one to back down from an argument, but his £5,000 wager with Jennings paid off. Jennings realised his blunder live on air, describing losing the wager as “painful” and a “disaster”.

In winning the bet, Morgan aimed a jibe at Jennings, posting on X:

“Hi mate, please pay £5k to @CorporalScotty and send me the receipt. Thanks.”

The handle @CorporalScotty refers to a charity supporting bereaved military children and young people.

Ronaldo breaks his duck

By breaking his duck against Uzbekistan, Ronaldo has now scored in six successive World Cup editions — 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, and 2026.

Ronaldo came under fire after an insipid display against DR Congo, where he managed just 25 touches and failed to register a goal, but the decision to keep him in the starting XI was vindicated.

His second goal against Uzbekistan saw Ronaldo draw level with Eusebio as Portugal’s all-time leading scorer at World Cup Finals (10 goals).

Ronaldo also became the second-oldest player to hit the target at a major tournament, with Cameroon icon Roger Milla holding that honour, aged 42 years and 39 days when he netted against Russia in 1994.

Although Ronaldo didn’t gain much traction in the Golden Boot market before the tournament started, he has now emerged as a contender. With one of the UK’s leading betting sites, BetMGM, Ronaldo is trading at 14/1 to finish the highest scorer, while long-standing rival Lionel Messi, who has five goals to his name in this edition, is the strong favourite to pick up the individual accolade.

Critics silenced

While Ronaldo inevitably comes under scrutiny given his stature, he was quick to silence his detractors, striking a defiant tone after Portugal’s win over Uzbekistan.

He said:

“Just so you don’t forget. Just so you don’t forget. It was a difficult, dark week.

“It felt like I was already retired from football, but I held on as I always do because I believe more in hard work than in football. It was difficult, I have to confess, but we’re back.”
