With just 10 weeks to go until the 2024 Cheltenham Festival, I was honoured to be joined by Jonjo O’neill Jr to discuss the stable stars at Jackdaws Castle. You’ll need to watch the video to get all of the details, but I’ve put together a quick overview for you here too.
The O’Neill team has enjoyed a fine season so far and they have some lovely youngsters coming through the ranks, including the exciting JP McManus-owned Novice Hurdler Johnnywho. We also talked about the outstanding Monbeg Genius, who finished third in last season’s Ultima. Jonjo has big plans for both of these, as you’ll see.
Whilst you are here, why not try out this cracking offer from Betfred? If you bet £10 you will get £30 in free bets - new customers only!
Although every horse in Jonjo’s yard has potential, these are the three that caught my attention the most, so be sure to add them to your trackers!
Monbeg Genius finished third in last year’s Ultima Handicap Chase and still has plenty of scope for improvement this season. Things didn't quite go right for him at Ascot, where he was pulled up, but he bounced back last time out at Newbury to finish a creditable third and that was a very encouraging sign.
He is currently running off a mark of 147 and there could still be more improvement in him off that. In fact, the O’Neill team have some big plans for him this season and it was really interesting to hear what Jonjo Jr thought about their top staying Chaser.
The most exciting Novice Hurdler in the O’Neill team this season is Johnnywho, and he has shown plenty of ability so far. He was unbeaten heading into the Challow Hurdle and even though he only managed to finish fourth, he did some very good work late on.
The general consensus is that if the race had been run on a faster surface then he would likely have had the better of them that day. Jonjo has a lot of time for this lad and it was most insightful to hear that he could have a big part to play at Cheltenham this year.
Mister Meggit made a lovely start to his Bumper career when winning on debut at Carlisle by 12 lengths. Even though that form has yet to be franked, he was visually very impressive that day.
He is one of several decent Bumper horses in the O’Neill yard this season and he’s definitely worth tracking. Jonjo had plenty of good things to say about this lad, along with some other big names in the stable.
