Playoff hopefuls Aldershot host relegation-threatened Boreham Wood in front of the TNT cameras. Read our match preview and best bets below.
An unbeaten run of six games to end last season saw Aldershot survive by five points, despite a late scare from a resurgent Torquay side. 64 goals were scored and 76 were conceded for the Shots in a topsy-turvy season. There were genuine fears of relegation heading into this campaign, but a savvy summer of recruitment had made them into promotion hopefuls.
Tommy Widdrington will be hoping for a similar run of form to end this season, as his Aldershot side has stuttered in recent weeks, putting their promotion hopes into jeopardy. The Shots are now without a win in five, with a remarkable run of form for FC Halifax seeing the Shaymen leapfrog Aldershot.
Their games have certainly been entertaining for the neutrals, with 70 goals and 77 conceded seeing their games average 3.4 goals. They have kept just one clean sheet in their last nine games.
Boreham Wood have qualified for the National League playoffs three times since promotion from the National League South. A fourth-place finish in the 2017/18 season saw them lose 2-1 to Tranmere in the final. In 2019-20, they finished fifth, losing 1-0 to Harrogate in the playoff semi-finals. Last year, a 6th place finish saw the Wood qualify for the playoff quarterfinals, where they defeated rivals Barnet away before a heartbreaking defeat to Notts County in the semi-finals.
Luke Garrard’s side actually picked up more points away from home last year, with 37 of their 72 points coming on their travels. Boreham Wood prided themselves on defensive solidity, conceding the fewest goals in the league (40). However, this season they have conceded 73 goals, keeping just one clean sheet in their last eight games.
This has been a key reason they are battling relegation, currently sitting in 21st. A run of six straight defeats was ended with a resounding 4-0 win over relegation rivals Wealdstone. With the legendary Luke Garrard leaving at the end of the season, Boreham Wood will be keen to ensure they survive to give the new manager the best possible foundations to build from.
After being released from Brighton in the summer, Lorent Tolaj was snapped up by Aldershot's savvy recruitment team. The 22-year-old is a complete forward, boasting pure strength and speed, as well as a fine eye for goal. He has 18 league goals this season.
The signing of the prolific Kabongo Tshimanga has boosted the Wood's attacking potency, with the 26-year-old scoring six goals in 13 games. He is now in his second spell at Boreham Wood having scored 38 goals across two seasons (2019-2021). A clinical spell at Chesterfield saw Peterborough sign him. However, this move didn't work out so Tshimanga is back at Meadow Park to attempt to steer Boreham Wood to safety.
