After the final of the Stuttgart Open, Andy Murray lost to Italian player Matteo Berrettini. Murray suffered a minor injury during the match, which required him to take multiple medical breaks.
With the Queen's Club Championship fast approaching, Murray had to decide his participation. Due to his injury, Murray was forced to pull out of the tournament, which was scheduled to be his last tune-up before Wimbledon.
Murray released a statement to inform the public about his condition. He then said he hopes to compete at the tournament in June.
An abdominal strain is considered to be the cause of his injury. Although it's not considered severe, Murray is still planning on playing at Wimbledon. According to Stuart Fraser of the Times Sports, Murray could participate in an exhibition match next week.
Since 2017, Murray has been dealing with various injuries. This was the second time Murray suffered from a groin injury this year. He also underwent hip surgery in 2019. During the second set of his match, he started experiencing discomfort in his abdomen. It was the first time the 35-year-old had had this type of issue during his career.
"I got some pain in my ab when I was serving. Not something I've had before," said Murray.
Since his last match was almost two weeks ago, he has played nine matches in 14 days. Murray was unsure of how his injury would affect his playing career.
"It’s a really long time [since] I have played nine matches in 14 days. So it is probably normal that I would feel some stuff in my body but I don’t really know the severity of it," Murray said prior to his withdrawal from the Queen's Club. "It's tough to say anything about the next weeks."
After his final loss, Murray was still optimistic about his performance during the tournament. He defeated Nick Kyrgios and Stefanos Tsitsipas earlier in the tournament. The 35-year-old athlete claimed to see a lot of progress in his game and hoped that his body could keep holding up for a long time.
While Murray is hoping to win his third Wimbledon title this year, the tournament's prize money is expected to add to the immense amount he has earned throughout his career.
According to a report by Essentially Sports, an online sports news outlet, Murray is worth around £135 million. He has also earned over £51 million from his playing career.
Aside from his playing career, the three-time Grand Slam champion has also been able to earn a considerable amount of money through various sponsorship deals. Some of these include those with companies such as Head and Standard Life.
In 2016, Murray signed a deal with a manufacturing company known as Jaguar. Three years later, he partnered with a tennis apparel brand called Castore.
Some other companies partnered with Murray include Amazon Prime Video, Head, UNICEF, and the NHS. Also, the tennis equipment manufacturer Head, Amazon Prime Video, and the WSB are among the organizations that have partnered with the athlete.
Besides his professional tennis career, Murray has also been involved in various charitable activities. He was recently named as a founding member of a council that aims to raise awareness about the issue of malaria.
