The PGA Tour heads to Kapalua for event number one

Golf fans, I am back for a brand-new season of golf and for the first PGA Tour event of 2024. This week we’re heading off to The Plantation in Kapalua, Hawaii, for the 2024 Sentry Tournament.

This opening event isn’t one that I like to get stuck into too much, but I have one strong selection who I feel has a big chance of getting 2024 off to a flyer.

The Plantation Course in Kapalua

The Plantation course may be 7596 yds on paper, but it doesn’t feel that long. When playing here there is a lot of roll off the tee, which often means using wedges into these Par 4s. The course is also one of the easiest on the PGA Tour, with some fairways being as wide as 65 yards.

That means you don’t get into too much trouble if you miss the middle line of the fairways, so driving accuracy isn’t a key component this week. Nonetheless, this is a very low-scoring course so reliable putting is an absolute necessity – you can’t win this tournament with average putting and you need four rounds in the 60s to get near the top of the leaderboard.

Matthew Fitzpatrick @ 28/1 - 1pt EW - 6 places

My only selection for this week is world number eight Matthew Fitzpatrick, who I think is overpriced at 28/1. Shot shape off the tee doesn’t matter, but I really liked the way he played with his irons last season and when he is hitting those well, the rest of his game seems to come together too.

There are a few players that I don’t fancy this week, due to a notable lack of golf since the Ryder Cup, but Matthew Fitzpatrick has been playing plenty over the Christmas break and I think he will be ready to go out and put on a big performance for his first start of the season.

This isn’t going to be a walk in the park, as this is a low scoring event where you need to be consistent for all four rounds, but I think Matthew Fitzpatrick is the best bet for this week’s PGA Tour.
