Today I’m bringing you my hottest betting tip for Saturday’s racing, which is on the all-weather at Wolverhampton. I have picked out Silky Wilkie, who runs for Middleham Park Racing, and I think he has an exceptional chance of going one better than his second place at Lingfield last time out. Here I'll explain why I think he is our Saturday winner.
This is my third article for Betting.co.uk now. If you missed my first two ante post picks for the Cheltenham Festival, it’s not too late to check out my 33/1 shot for the Gold Cup or my 10/1 tip for the Coral Cup. And speaking of The Festival, I’ll be bringing you betting tips every day next week from Monday all the way through to Saturday. Don’t miss out, make sure you check in every day for those!

Silky Wilkie spent the start of 2025 over in Meydan, but seemingly hated his time over there with his three runs producing very poor results. In those three races against 40 rivals combined, he only managed to beat four home.
However, it was pleasing to see him bounce back to form on his return to the UK with a second at Lingfield eight days ago. That was a Class 2 race with £23,193 for the winner, so it was a competitive race and not an easy one to win. The winner was Ferrous, who has some decent form to his credit and was well-supported. However, Silky Wilkie ran a cracker to finish second and proved it was just Dubai that he was out of love with, rather than the racing game as a whole.
Silky Wilkie has run twice at Wolverhampton previously, in 2023 and 2024 that he did. Back in 2023 he raced over course and distance and finished eighth. Then in February 2024, he ran over the 5f trip here and finished fourth. Now these finishing positions may not sound great, but it’s worth noting that they were both Class 2 races and he was competing off marks of 100 and 101 respectively.
He was only beaten 3.75 lengths and 2.5 lengths in those two races. When you consider that he is now rated at just 90 - effectively between 10lb and 11lb lower - and he comes here to contest a much weaker 0-90 Class 3 contest today, a repeat of those previous levels of form would see him very hard to beat.
The last win recorded by Silky Wilkie came back in April 2023, on the turf up in Musselburgh, where he recorded a facile victory off a mark of 99, which is 9lb higher than his current rating. If you look back two months prior to that, you will find his latest all weather win was at Kempton off a mark of 94, which is 4lb higher than his current rating.
If you are concerned that these are a while back, rest assured that he was placed second in the extremely valuable Ayr Gold Cup as recently as September 2024 and that was off a mark of 99 as well. His latest performance was off this same mark of 90 and the RPR figure of 96 produced that day would give him an excellent chance of winning as he drops down into Class 3 company today.
Horses running so quickly after their last run can often be a negative, or at least a concern, as they may still be feeling the effects. Although Silky Wilkie runs just eight days after his latest race, looking back through his form in the book, I actually believe this is a positive. His form figures when turned out again within 10 days of a prior run read 12246222820.
As you can see, he typically responds very well to a fast turnaround time. It is also worth noting that the worrying figures that I have bolded and underlined happened when connections tried to give him three quick runs, rather than just two. As that is not the case today, I’ll happily draw a line through those.
Considering all of the points outlined above, I think Silky Wilkie has an exceptionally good chance of winning today. He seemed to enjoy his recent return to UK racing, he has performed well at this track previously, he is dangerously handicapped and he usually performs exceptionally well with a fast turnaround time.
I also find it interesting that Sam Feilden rides this time, claiming 5lb and bringing Silkie Wilkie’s weight down from 9st 9lb to 9st 4lb. Sam Feilden rode him for his sole AW success to date, so hopefully that is a good omen. At 11/2, it’s a small profit of 0.1pts if Silky Wilkie can just hit the places, but a win would see us return a lovely 8.6pts and that would be a welcome addition to the betting pot ahead of the Cheltenham Festival next week.
With the 2025 Cheltenham Festival just a few days away, now is the time to open a new account and grab a fantastic sign up offer from one of our recommended bookmakers.
