Thanks for joining me this week as we focus on the Wells Fargo Championship, which has become a real signature event on the PGA Tour. Last year it was won by Wyndham Clark, who then went on to win the US Open just a couple of months later. For this year I have another player with a very similar profile that I’m hoping can perform a similar feat, but I must say straight out that he is yet to win on Tour. I am taking a bit of a swing at him here, but he is getting closer to breaking through, and he will be ideally suited to this week’s course at Quail Hollow.
For this week's Wells Fargo Championship, Coral has a superb offer for new customers.
Bet £5, and you’ll get £20 in free bets. With 10 places on offer, this gives you a fantastic chance to mop up some place money.
The PGA Tour heads to Quail Hollow Golf Club for the Wells Fargo Championship this week and it’s all set to be a superb event. The course is a Par 71 over 7558 yards and for the most part you need a good all-round player here, but one of the more intricate trends to focus on is players that scramble well. It’s a long course to get round and the rough can be very tricky, so players will need to be dialled in with their long approach play.
They are all sure to miss a few greens, but damage limitation is crucial to make some shots on the field, meaning that good chipping and putting is an absolute must. Last year's winner was Wyndham Clark and just 12 months later he is now a Major Champion and stands at just 16/1 to win this for a second year running. Ludvig Aberg has withdrawn due to having a minor knee injury and with the second Major of the year coming up next week, he stated that he wants to rest it before teeing up at Valhalla. And who can blame him after finishing second in his first ever attempt at the Masters last month. Unsurprisingly, Rory Mcilroy tees up here as the tournament favourite, but I have a few further down the market that take my fancy.
As mentioned, Wyndham Clark won this event as a maiden last year before going on to win the US Open for us at 80/1 and this year I fancy Denny McCarthy to follow a similar path. Although Denny is yet to win on Tour, he has come close a few times now and was desperately unlucky to get beaten by Akshay Bhatia in a playoff at the Valero Texas Open after shooting his last nine at 8 under par.
Denny is without doubt one of the best putters on Tour and when he is playing with confidence he really does get on a roll and can compete at the very top level. I believe that as soon as he wins his first event on Tour he will be away and just continue to progress from there - and that first win looks imminent. At a course like Quail Hollow you really need to be good around the greens and with Denny being able to make putts from anywhere, this has to be an advantage for him. Denny McCarthy is my main bet for this week, and I’ll also be backing him for the US Open while he stands at 150/1. My advice is to back him now for both events, because if he does pull off a win this week, that 150/1 is going to shorten up dramatically.
Next up, I’m going to have a punt on
Will Zalatoris
because he has really begun to impress me in recent weeks and looks to be finding his very best form once again. Now, I have said many times that I don’t think he is quite ready to win a Major just yet, but he is well up to winning signature events like the Wells Fargo and his recent consistency has me hooked this week. His clean Iron swing comes as second nature and I like that for this event.
If he comes into this swinging his club well in round one, then Will Zalatoris could really make his mark at Quail Hollow
and I think he is a great bet for this week.
Player number three for this week's squad is Max Homa, who placed for us in The Masters last month at 22/1 and looks very much in control of his game at the moment. Despite finishing in a tie for third at the Masters, he was the second best player from tee to green and just had no luck on the greens with his putter. He hit his putts well and was very close to picking the right lines but caught too many lip outs and he was plagued by that for two whole rounds.
In fairness, he didn’t allow it to affect his game from tee to green at all, and a similar display this week will give him plenty of birdie opportunities. He has to be high on the list and even though 22/1 isn’t a huge price, his ability to me suggests he should even be a little shorter in the market. If those putts start to drop in this week, I can easily see him winning a seventh PGA Tour title.
My final selection for the Wells Fargo is Matt Fitzpatrick who ticks a lot of boxes for this event and is slowly coming to the boil of late. He is a Major winner already, and I love his positive attitude. He always gives his game 110% and makes it abundantly clear that he wants to win. Just like Will Zalatoris, he plays a lovely fade with his irons, has a very repeatable swing and his short game is pretty reliable for the most part. Overall, Matt Fitzpatrick is perfectly suited to this course and if brings his best game here this week, then he must be a strong contender.
