Last week we had tons of racing action all week, coming from Glorious Goodwood and Galway, as well as elsewhere. We enjoyed great success at Glorious Goodwood, with Rhoscolyn winning at 12/1. We also had Racing League success at Wolverhampton with Intervention also winning for us at 10/1. Those two tips alone saw 4pts turned into 30.4pts!
I usually produce four free betting tips each week for Betting.co.uk, but as you were spoiled with five articles last week, it will be a quieter week for me this time around. We had my results article yesterday, which contained some exciting news. Today we have an antepost selection, and I’ll have one more betting tip for you tomorrow as well. Make sure you tune in for that one!
My articles vary from daily betting tips, to antepost betting tips and also other types of content such as guides and big race trends. If antepost articles like today’s interest you though, be sure to check out my article for the 2025 St Leger in September. I also have some early picks for the 2026 Cheltenham Festival and the 2026 Grand National, so be sure to check those out to get on at the early prices.
At the time of writing, William Hill are offering an antepost price of 10/1 on Ethical Diamond for the 2025 York Ebor Handicap, and you won’t find a better price anywhere else. The great value doesn’t stop with the price, as William Hill have a superb sign up offer for new customers. If you bet £10, they’ll give you £40 of free bets. With the Ebor Festival kicking off on 20 August, those free bets could help build your betting bankroll in readiness.
At a price of 10/1, I feel it’s worth a small early play on the Willie Mullins-trained Ethical Diamond, who runs in the 2025 York Ebor Handicap on 23 August. Here I’ll show you why I think he’s a great pick for this race.
Before we get into it though, would you like to attend the Ebor Festival at York on the Saturday that the 2025 Ebor Handicap takes place? If so, Betting.co.uk has a ticket giveaway active over on their X account. Entries are free, and will remain open until Saturday 9 August 2025. One lucky entrant will win two County Stand tickets worth £160! If this is of interest, the X giveaway is open right now!
Trainer Willie Mullins, and owner, the H O S Syndicate, know how to win the Ebor Handicap, as they managed to achieve that feat back in 2023 with Absurde.
Absurde went to the Copper Horse Handicap at Royal Ascot, where he finished second to the extremely talented Vauban. He then had a spin in a Listed Novice Hurdle at Galway, before going on to win the Ebor. Long term followers of mine will remember we had 2pts Each Way on Absurde at 8/1 - a beautiful result!
Ethical Diamond has trodden a similar path, as he too went to Royal Ascot. However, he ran in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes over a 2f shorter trip and won his race. He bypassed Galway last week, and may head straight to York for the Ebor Handicap. Unless plans change, Ethical Diamond is set to go to the Ebor Handicap with the exact same mark of 104 that Absurde had two years ago.
As touched upon in the previous section, Ethical Diamond comes here in fantastic form having won the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot.
He took a keen hold, and was left a bit short of room about 3f out, but he switched left, and soon made headway. He led inside the final furlong and ran on to go clear, finishing the race in the style of a very smart horse.
Mount Atlas was back in fifth that day, and last month he went back to Ascot for another Class 2 Handicap and won off the same mark of 102, to give Ethical Diamond’s form even more substance.
Considering the manner of the victory, and the depth of the race, the subsequent 8lb rise could have been worse. Also, the way he powered home certainly makes him of strong interest at York over a trip that’s 2f further. The possibility of potential improvement for the step up in trip could well have kept him ahead of the handicapper.
At the time of writing, Willie Mullins has the favourite for the Ebor Handicap, but it’s not Ethical Diamond! It's actually his stablemate, Hipop De Loire, who has the shortest price, at around the 3/1 to 4/1 mark currently.
I’m not interested for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I think that is exceptionally short for any horse in the Ebor Handicap, with it having such a big field, not to mention that it’s an extremely competitive affair too. Secondly, I’m not convinced Hipop De Loire will get his optimal ground conditions. Whilst he ran a big race in last year’s renewal, on rattlingly-fast going, I think he’d be at his best with a little juice in the ground.
On the flip side, Ethical Diamond proved at Royal Ascot that he can excel and win on that type of ground. As a general rule, with the race being run in August, we tend to see the Ebor Handicap run on Good to Firm ground. If this comes to fruition again, I think Ethical Diamond would enjoy the conditions more than Hipop De Loire.
Both of these horses could well be heading the Melbourne Cup if Willie can get them qualified, as it is a race he likes to target. The Ebor Festival is subsequently of huge interest to him, as it’s a “Golden Ticket” for the Melbourne Cup, allowing the winner to bypass the ballot process. However, it’s not the only route into the race, you can qualify by placing in any internationally-recognised Group race of over 2,000 metres. As a result, there is a risk that Willie sends Ethical Diamond down a different route to qualify him, rather than gambling on him winning this competitive Handicap.
With the logic that Ethical Diamond would enjoy the (potentially) quicker ground conditions more than Hipop De Loire, along with the fact that he would receive 2lb from him, I think Ethical Diamond is the more interesting of the Willie Mullins pair. Especially considering the difference between their prices.
Interestingly, prior to running at Galway at the end of last month, Hipop De Loire was available at 6/1 for the Ebor Handicap. I cannot help feeling that there is a bit of recency bias going on here. Hipop De Loire has been seen in winning form, and after the race, Willie confirmed he wants to head back to the Ebor Handicap with him after last year’s fifth place. I think a lot would simply hear those words leave Willie’s mouth, and then just back Hipop De Loire for the race, rather than it being a deeper market move. Let’s face it, in the modern era it doesn’t take too much money to move the antepost markets.
As Ethical Diamond is not guaranteed to run at this stage, I’m keeping this bet to half stakes and win only. I want to secure some of the 10/1 on offer now, and if he is declared to run, we can always look to go back in for a second bet, subject to the price at the time. If he does line up, I think he will be at a much shorter price, perhaps around the 5/1 mark, if not even shorter.
