It’s never too soon to talk about the Cheltenham Festival is it? With the 2026 Cheltenham Festival over, I’m already thinking about next year! There’s always value to be found in the early markets, and I think I’ve found a cracking bet at 50/1. I won’t be going crazy on the stake, but I do want to get him locked in at his current generous odds.
In case you are not already familiar with me, I’m RacingGav and I’ve been providing free horse racing tips and other content for betting.co.uk since the beginning of March last year, on X “RacingGav” for more than four years. The tips I publish are a mix of daily betting tips and antepost picks, with today’s article being a prime example of the latter.
The other content I write includes big race trends, educational guides, and other non-trending racing news. Some of my guides cover a specific topic like how to use the William Hill Horse Racing Bet Builder, while some have a broader theme, betting fundamentals, for example. Ultimately, whether you’re a casual punter or a seasoned one, there should be something for everybody to enjoy and learn from.
If you’re joining me on this antepost bet, William Hill is the bookmaker to use! At the time of writing, a handful of bookmakers have Derryhassen Paddy priced up for the Brown Advisory and William Hill is one of them. In fact, they are offering the best horse racing odds currently available at 50/1. Furthermore, if you’re new to William Hill you can claim a welcome bonus. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. Definitely worth doing to catch this early price.
There are risks attached to antepost betting. Plans change, and horses get injured, among other things. Therefore, you want odds with plenty of value to make the risk worthwhile. So at 50/1 Derryhassen Paddy ticks that box, and in this article, I’ll eplain my reasons for backing him.
Derryhassen Paddy won his only Point-To-Point in Ireland, after which he was sold. He was sent to Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore, and won a Bumper at Ayr on his yard debut, then went on to win his first two races over Hurdles. His next run was in the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the 2025 Cheltenham Festival, where he was sent off at 10/1.
Derryhassen Paddy finished third, and the form worked out well. The winner, Jasmin De Vaux, followed up at the Punchestown Festival. The horse in second place, The Big Westerner, went close on her Chase debut, before winning a Grade 2 on her second start over fences. The fourth-placed Wendigo won a Grade 2 over fences, before placing in a Grade 1 at Christmas, then winning his next Chase start. He was also looking very promising in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, but unfortunately he fell at the last.
The most interesting part is that Derryhassen Paddy wasn’t intended to be a Hurdler. Connections have always felt he would come into his own over fences. So based on the fact that he was able to compete and place in a Grade 1 Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival, he can potentially do the same over fences. Also, after winning his first four starts on Heavy and Soft, I’d say the Good to Soft going (perhaps closer to Good) was plenty quick enough for him too. Last but not least, I’d say that his Cheltenham Festival form and ability to act on the track is another bonus.
In November 2025, Derryhassen Paddy made his hugely-anticipated Chase debut at Ayr, the track where he won his Bumper. The trip was on the short side at 2m 4.5f, but he had his favoured Soft ground. Despite the race looking like a stepping stone for his education, and with it being his first start of the season, he still went off as 5/6F.
He made an error at the first, almost unseating Derek Fox, and his jumping was somewhat novicey in general. He made a particularly bad mistake three out, but still looked to have a chance. Two out, he looked like he might win, but his effort petered out and he could only finish second, beaten around four lengths by Sixmilebridge. Notably, Sixmilebridge has franked the form since, by winning at Cheltenham in December, then landing Grade 1 honours in the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown.
But there was some sad news for Derryhassen Paddy, who unfortunately suffered a fracture that day, most likely when he hit the open ditch hard. So he had an excuse for that effort, but it does make you wonder how the race would have ended if that hadn’t happened. Given that, and how the form has worked out since, Derryhassen Paddy’s Chase debut run looks much better with the benefit of hindsight.
As is often the case, the betting markets are driven by recency bias. As a result of his underwhelming Chase debut, and absence following his injury, Derryhassen Paddy seems to have been completely overlooked for the 2027 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, and the 50/1 available completely underestimates his chances.
Derryhassen Paddy suffered a small fracture in his fetlock, which is a fairly common injury that most horses return from, and I wouldn’t be overly concerned about it. Also, as he didn’t win at Ayr, he retains his Novice status over fences, which means he is still eligible for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase. It’s the obvious target for him once again, and if he performs impressively at the start of next season, his price could be slashed significantly.
King Rasko Grey currently heads the market, priced between 8/1 and 10/1, simply because he won the Turners Novices’ Hurdle. Ironically, connections were talking about the Champion Hurdle for him after his victory, which is a far cry from the 3m Brown Advisory. Second favourite, No Drama This End, pulled up at the Cheltenham Festival, so although better is expected, he has questions to answer currently. The next couple in the market, Mighty Park and Old Park Star, are both unlikely to run in this race.
The smart play for now is a small 0.5pt win bet. That ensures we have Derryhassen Paddy on our side at 50/1 if all goes well and his odds shorten significantly. But at the same time, should the plan go awry, we won’t lose much sleep over a small half point bet. If he does well at the start of the 2026/27 season, there is nothing stopping us from backing him again, so there’s no point in getting carried away at this early stage.
Although some have written him off already, I’m not one of them. Peter Scudamore once said Derryhassen Paddy is the closest he’s had to another Carvill’s Hill, which is very strong praise indeed. For those who don’t know, Carvill’s Hill won the Welsh Grand National by 20 lengths carrying top weight, and the Irish Gold Cup twice, so he was a proper horse. He was actually sent off favourite for the 1992 Cheltenham Gold Cup, but he pulled muscles in his chest and back and damaged a tendon, seeing him finish a distant fifth. Martin Pipe, who trained him during the later stages of his career, said Carvill’s Hill was “the best horse I have ever trained”. Peter Scudamore was also an eight-time Champion Jockey, riding 1,678 winners, so he knows the time of day when it comes to judging horses.
Let’s get Derryhassen Paddy on our side, and hope he can fulfil his potential next season. He is held in high regard at Arlary House Stables, and if he can live up to his reputation, he will be a serious force to be reckoned with, one that makes the current 50/1 look very silly.
