We have just the two Grade 1s to look at on Thursday, but there are runners in each that look set to add a Cheltenham/Punchestown double to their resumes. The first of them runs in the two-mile Novice Chase, where Gaelic Warrior is looking to back up his win in the Arkle Chase last month. There has always been a lot of talk about him jumping out to the right, but surely that won’t be a problem in this small-field renewal.
Our second Grade 1 is the three-mile Stayers’ Hurdle where Teahupoo lines up against a field he should beat easily. No doubt he would prefer a bit of cut in the ground but he is the proven Graded performer of this season and he ought to be hard to beat regardless. It’s another very competitive day of racing, so let’s get stuck into it.
William Hill has £30 of free bets waiting for you to claim them. All you need to do is bet £10, and you’ll get £30 in free bets as soon as your first bet is settled.
It's a rather disappointing turnout for the Grade 1 Novices’ Chase with just the four runners, but nonetheless it's good to see some class horses lining up. Gaelic Warrior won the Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in scintillating fashion, and if he turns up in the same form, he is going to be extremely hard to beat. We already know that he comes with plenty of quirks, and jumping out to the right is obviously one of them, but it really shouldn't cause any problems in a small-field race on a right-handed track. I have no concerns here whatsoever. I imagine he will just go on from the front as usual, and extend when he’s asked to head for home. In my eyes, he’s a tough nut to crack.
That said, Il Etait Temps has really surprised me this season. Firstly by winning the Irish Arkle over the two-mile trip, then going on to win at Aintree over two and a half, and in good fashion too. He does have a bit to find with Gaelic Warrior, but he will act well round Punchestown and is far from being a pushover here. Hercule De Seuil won five Chases on the spin before getting turned over at Aintree. However, I think he is just a pure Grade 2 horse who will win plenty more races but lacks class. Mount Frisco is the fourth runner who lines up here, but it’s highly unlikely he’ll be getting anywhere near these.
GJ Verdict - Gaelic Warrior
I have really enjoyed the Stayers’ campaign this season and Teahupoo is the second runner here that’s looking to pull off a Cheltenham/Punchestown double and he is definitely the most likely to do so. I do have some slight concerns with the ground starting to dry out because we’ve seen him to best effect on a softer surface, but I still think he has the best chance of winning against this field.
Buddy One is a very likeable horse who just keeps improving for each run and I’m sure he’s set to put on another good performance here. He’s destined to have a crack at Chasing next season, so this is most likely his last run over Hurdles and he has solid each way claims. Home By The Lee is a horse I have never really cared for too much. I think he lacks class compared to the favourite, he isn't the most reliable sort either. Sire De Berlais could potentially have one more big day in him and the drying ground would move him higher on the list. He has plenty of gears on a going day and even at the age of 12, I would still give him a squeak here. Of the remainder, Monkfish and Asterion Forlonge may prove best of the rest.
