The fourth and final Major of the year is upon us as the 152nd Open Championship is set to take place at Royal Troon this week. We have just seen a superb event at the Renaissance Club in the Scottish Open and we’re in for an even better event this week as all of the world's top players are set to lineup here.
Brian Harman claimed the claret jug at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club last year and he is back to defend his title. However, despite being another links-style course, the Royal Troon presents a completely different challenge and Harman will need to deliver an exceptional performance to win a second Open Championship. One notable absentee from the Scottish Open was world number one Scottie Scheffler. Despite not playing last week, Scheffler will be showing up at Royal Troon and is expected to be among the leaders come Sunday. Having already won six times this year he’s the red hot favourite, but his price reflects that, so I’m looking for players who can offer us more value.
Along with my main betting tips, I’ll also be putting up a couple of big odds longshots that are worth considering, especially with so many places available. We’ve had plenty of success with these longshots previously and we were so close again last week with Jorge Campillo finishing just a couple of shots outside the money in last week's Scottish Open, at a whopping 400/1.
With the best price and place terms available (5 places at ¼ odds) BetVictor gets my vote this week. Not only that, if you’re a new customer, you can take advantage of this offer.
Bet £5, and you’ll get £30 in free bets. Spot on, if you plan to have a punt on my longshots as well.
The Open Championship returns to Royal Troon this year for the 152nd edition. This is the first time Royal Troon has hosted the event since Henrik Stenson's remarkable victory in 2016, which featured one of the best performances I've ever witnessed on a golf course. Stenson and Phil Mickelson engaged in a thrilling back-and-forth battle, leaving the rest of the field far behind. If we get anything close to that level of entertainment this year, we are in for an incredible week of golf.
Royal Troon is a Par 71 stretching over 7,385 yards, and winning here is not going to be easy. Not only does it require excellent play from tee to green, but it also needs a lot of imagination around the greens to get the ball close to the hole. This course is an extremely tough test of golf, and any wind this week will only add to the challenge. The fast greens here highlight the importance of a strong short game, but players who can control their iron trajectory will gain an advantage by finding the flat spots on the greens and that is a big bonus. While it may sound straightforward, believe me, this is a true test even for the best players on the planet. So sit back and enjoy the inevitable drama.
My first betting tip for the Open Championship is world number 22 Tyrell Hatton. He is an extremely talented player who looks destined to win the Open one day and I think his time has come. He is excellent on these links-style golf courses when he brings his best game and he has been trending in the right direction at recent tournaments too.
He played in the LIV Golf Andalucia event at Valderama last week where he finished third, just one shot behind the joint leaders, and he looked very good for all three days.
The most appealing attribute about Tyrell Hatton's golf last week was his controlled iron play and that is exactly what is required here at Royal Troon. He has a very reliable short game and is very familiar with links-style golf courses. I think Tyrell Hatton is in with a huge chance this week and has all the attributes needed to win here.
My second pick for the Open Championship is Tommy Fleetwood. Now, Tommy is a player that l’ve backed many times and he has never quite managed to get the job done so far. However, he showed a different side to his game in the Scottish Open last week, so this could be a good time to stick with him. He played rounds of 65, 69 and 66, before finishing with a respectable 71 in the final round. That was solid golf, with very few mistakes and he looks much more compact with his golf swing of late too.
I really like the fact he has shown more control of the ball around the greens just lately and that will bode really well for him this week. Like Tyrell Hatton, he has a very good iron game and is generally reliable with the short stick too, so I am willing to put my neck on the line for him one more time. He has yet to win a Major but he finished runner up in the US Open and tied for 10th place in the Open Championship last year. On paper, Tommy Fleetwood has a massive chance this week and it would be no surprise to see him lifting the claret jug on Sunday.
