The DP World Tour heads to the United Arab Emirates for the final two tournaments of this season, and they are both sure to be superb. We have very strong lineups for both events, and we kickstart this busy two week period with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, which takes place at the Yas Links Golf Course.
It’s a very unique type of course, which requires a wide range of skills, but I think I have found two players that fit the bill. I haven’t looked too far down the betting for this specialist course, although I have selected a couple of promising longshots which I’ll be covering in a separate article.
Betfair is your best bet for a punt on the Abu Dhabi Championship, thanks to its great prices for the event. If you don’t already have an account there, you can also take advantage of a new customer deal.
Bet £10, and you’ll get £30 in free bets. Now is a great time to jump on board.
The Yas Links Golf Course in Abu Dhabi plays host to the HSBC Championship this week, and this is one of the best courses in the United Arab Emirates. It’s a Par 72 that stretches to 7425 yards bringing a true test for golfers with numerous variables. This is a pure links course, with a lot of water and tons of bunkers, but that’s just the start of the difficulties.
A lot also depends on the wind factor, as the Par 5s cannot be reached facing into a head wind. If the wind does pick up, the players will be forced to lay up, which will make it much more difficult to achieve a decent score on the longer holes. If the wind is quiet, or blowing towards the greens, then it is possible to reach them in two shots, giving the potential for birdies.
However, the difficulties don’t end there. The greens themselves are very undulating, and finding the right spot to land the ball is extremely difficult. It takes a really skilled golfer to win here, but I am focusing on those who are accurate with their approach shots, and also have a solid short game. Whatever happens, this event really is worthy of a watch, and I’m sure we are in for a real treat.
My number one pick for this event is world number 10 Tommy Fleetwood. He is an extremely talented player, who already has seven DP World Tour titles under his belt, and he suits this week’s course very well indeed. He is long off the tee, and hits a perfect soft draw with his irons, which looks ideal for the way this course sets up. Tommy has yet to win a Major, but he does have an uncanny knack for picking up the next biggest tournaments on Tour.
Tommy Fleetwood has been quite frustrating for punters at times, and he should have possibly won more events. However,
he has really good form in this part of the world, and particularly so on undulating courses like this, where you need to be accurate to find the flat spots. He will want to start well this week, but he has all the right credentials. In my opinion this week’s event looks like one he could easily add to his resume, and I fancy his chances strongly indeed.
My second selection for the Abu Dhabi Championship is Matt Wallace. He has enjoyed a fine season on Tour, and looks a reformed character this year, especially when winning the European Masters in gritty fashion. His overall game from tee to green has improved a huge amount, and his short game is also much more consistent. Like Tommy Fleetwood he generally plays with a soft draw, and his ability to produce low scores on a regular basis should stand him in really good stead this week.
The two things I really like about Matt Wallace are his ability to vary the height of his shots, and his consistent distance control, both of which are necessities to be in contention here. You definitely need players that hit plenty of greens in regulation this week, and based on the way Matt has played this season, he is showing all of the right traits. I believe he is a player on his way to the top again, and at his current price he looks a cracking bet.
