Unfortunately, we drew a blank in the Open De Espana last week, despite Sam Bairstow sitting in second for a fair part of the tournament. His form took a turn for the worse during round three, and he was never able to recover from a Triple bogey on an easy Par 4.
This week on the DP World Tour we are looking at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which takes place across three different golf courses. We have the Old Course at St Andrews, Kingsbarns Golf Links, and Carnoustie, with the latter being the hardest of the three. At this time of year the weather conditions can be very challenging in that part of the world and often influence the outcome of this event.
Unlike most tournaments there is a cut after 54 holes, rather than the usual 36. Following the cut, the top 60 players advance to the final round at St Andrews to play for the title. Last year's winner was Matt Fitzpatrick, who put on a superb display of golf over the four days, to win with a score of 19 under par, and I imagine the winning score will again be similar for this year’s event. Finding the right player for this event is a challenge all of its own.
You need someone who handles links courses, and is capable of being consistent over the four days on three different golf courses. This event poses a real test for the players, and only those who can quickly adapt to the different conditions and courses will do well here. I have picked out two very solid players for the Tournament ahead and I am hoping to have us back in the money this week.
Ladbrokes have eight places available for this week’s DPWT event, and a handy free bet offer for new customers. Bet £5, and you’ll get £20 in free bets. No Ladbrokes account yet? Well now is a good time to open one.
My first pick this week is Dean Burmester from South Africa. His playing style suits links golf courses really well and his overall consistency gives him plenty of appeal this week. As a four-time DP World Tour winner Burmester knows how to get the job done, and he has all the attributes that I like for this week’s event.
He is a very good ball striker, who controls his iron trajectory well, and his short game is pretty reliable too. He has typically managed to pick up wins at courses that require a good iron game and this tournament looks perfectly set up for him.
You need players that are highly adaptable and able to cope with the different courses, which Dean Burmester definitely is, making the 50/1 on offer a very generous price indeed.
Sebastian Soderberg makes it into my squad this week as the real box-ticker in the field. He is an impressive ball striker and he has one of the best swings on tour, so I think this week could be the time to side with him. You really want a solid iron player on your side for this tournament and when he is swinging well, Soderberg is one of the best out there.
He is able to control the ball well, he has a soft shot shape, and his short game has been improving all season long. Although Sebastian Soderberg hasn’t been on my radar for a while, I really feel this multi-course event will suit him very well indeed. The 60/1 price tag suggests that Soderberg is being overlooked here, and with the credentials on offer I’m more than happy to side with him this week.
