The DP World Tour heads for the Belfry this week for the 2024 British Masters, one of the highlight events on every golfer’s calendar. There are three courses at the Belfry, but the main course, the one where the Tour events take place, is the Brabazon. As expected, we have a very strong lineup for this year’s British Masters, but I have two selections who look very promising indeed based on their skills.
I cannot wait for this one to get underway, not only is this a signature tournament, I have personal experience of the Brabazon course. Back in the day, when I was playing golf full-time, I did actually manage to win an event held on this course, so I know it very well and have an excellent idea of what it takes to come out on top here.
For this week’s British Masters, Coral is right on top of the game in terms of prices and places. They also have a great deal up for grabs for new customers. Bet £5, and you’ll get £20 in free bets. A top-class deal, for a top-class event!
It’s great to see the DP World Tour returning to England's home of golf for the 2024 British Masters. This tournament will take place on the Brabazon course, which is a 7336 yard Par 72 that requires a full range of skills. The most important of those is excellent iron play. If you hit the greens around the Belfry, then you have a good chance of scoring well, but missing them makes the up and downs very difficult to execute.
You have plenty of room off the tee, so I won’t be putting too much emphasis on that part of the game, but you do need a solid ball striker, who is good with their irons. Lastly, although the greens here are quite big, they are very undulating, so an accurate short game is a must. I believe that my selections both have solid chances this week, but whatever happens, it is sure to be a seriously good week of golf.
My first pick this week is world number 127 Guido Migliozzi, who has all of the attributes needed to play well at the Belfry. He is a tremendously good ball striker from tee to green, and his solid iron play will stand him in good stead around the Brabazon course. He has already won for us this year, thanks to his victory in the Italian Open which has a lot of similarities to this week’s event.
It’s essential to have a good ball striker on your side here, because hitting greens in regulation is an absolute must and Guido fits that bill quite well. He can hit the ball both ways, and has a lovely stock shot with a soft fade, and he is sure to need that if he is still in contention in the final round.
He is reliable off the tee, he hits his irons very well, and he is pretty solid with a putter in his hand too. As far as suiting a course can go on paper, Guido gets top marks and he is my strongest selection of the week.
Selection number two is Richard Mansell, who could finally be ready to break his maiden on the DP World Tour. He is like Guido Migliozzi in the sense that he is a very good ball striker. He is also a player who has been progressing quietly since he gained his full tour card on the DPWT circuit. There is no denying that he has had a few ups and downs. Sometimes following up a great performance with a not-so-good one, but here at the Belfry, his game looks absolutely spot on for the course.
Richard has plenty of previous experience here, and has won a fair few amateur events over the years. The fact that he is already familiar with the course is an excellent starting point, and if he sets off with a positive attitude in the first round I can see him getting heavily involved this week. He can hit the ball both ways and he is superb from tee to green when he is in form. He has finished in the top 10 in two of his last four starts, and is sure to feel very much at home here on the Brabazon course. If he can bring his best game here, Richard Mansell has a big chance of getting his name on the leaderboard.
