We have more DP World Tour action on the European circuit this week as the Danish Golf Championship takes place at a new venue. I have two selections lined up, both with a really good chance of playing well here, even though the field is looking very strong indeed.
Last year's winner was home player and fan-favourite Rasmus Hojgaard who won the event when it was held at Himmerland. This year it will take place at Lubker Golf Resort and Rasmus is back to try and retain his title, accompanied by brother Nicolai, who is better-known as a PGA Tour player. Both are sure to be popular with the punters.
My two players look well-suited to this course on paper and I am feeling quite confident about their chances this week, but I will also have two longshot selections for you, if you fancy trying out the each way market for low stakes. Keep an eye out for those.
BetVictor has a generous offer available for new members. If you bet £5, you’ll get £30 in free bets. Perfect if you’re planning a punt on my longshots too.
This week, the DP World Tour heads to Denmark for the Danish Golf Championship, which was formerly known as the Made In Himmerland. We have a new venue for this year's tournament, as the Lubker Golf Resort plays host to a DP World Tour event for the very first time. It has previously hosted a Challenge Tour event and it is fully deserving of this honour. In 2022 Lubker was voted the best course in Denmark, and after taking a close look, I can clearly see why.
The course is a Par 71 stretching over 7,026 yards with four Par 5s and the layout is absolutely superb. It is a parkland course, but it has actually been built mostly on sand, giving it a links feel from tee to green. The undulating fairways make the approach shots difficult enough, but the heavily contoured greens mean that a consistent short game is an absolute must this week. Players who can control their distance with their irons are more likely to get birdie chances, but only if they can bring their best game and keep their cool.
My top selection is world number 48 Nicolai Hojgaard who is one seriously talented player and fully deserves his 12/1 price tag for this event. He is predominantly a PGA Tour player, but comes here this week to play on home soil. He is a three-time winner on the DPWT already and also participated in the Ryder Cup, where he played superbly all week. The best part of his game is definitely his iron play - not only does he hit a nice soft controlled fade, but he has seriously good distance control too, and that is a big plus this week.
Nicolai is a player who is more than capable of shooting really low scores, so even if he is a few shots back after two rounds, he can turn it round no problem and his short game is pretty hot too. He is by far the most talented player in this field, and I think he will win this year's event. Nicolai Hojgaard is short enough in the market, but I think he is good value for it, so I’m siding with him to get the job done this week.
My second pick is Tom McKibbin who looks primed for a big performance this week. He has had twelve top 25 finishes in his last 16 events, including six top 10s. His penultimate start was in the Open Championship, where he played fairly well. Then, after almost a month away from tournament golf, he came back to shoot an opening round of 73 in the Czech Masters without doing much wrong, then built on that to play a round of 68. Although he missed the cut, the way he bounced back to top form in round two was impressive.
He may well have needed that first round back to get into the swing of things, and now looks poised to move on. He has a very good game from tee to green, but is exceptionally good in the short game department, and this course suits him better than most in the field. He can hit the ball both ways and is a very good scorer on his day. The form we saw in his second round at the Czech Masters would see Tom McKibbin near the top of the leaderboard this week. He has become progressively better over the last year and must surely be in line for a place here.
