The DP World Tour heads to Switzerland this week for the European Masters, and this is an event that never fails to provide some serious entertainment. The Crans-Sur-Sierre Golf Club plays host and this is a superb venue for the tournament. We will take a closer look at the course shortly.
Last week’s event saw my main selections start well, but both disappointed in round three and neither was able to recover. Due to the very specific set of skills needed to play well on this tricky course, I have just two selections again for this week.
Coral is offering seven places for the European Masters, and if you don’t have an account already, they have a generous welcome offer up for grabs too. Bet £5, and you’ll get £20 in free bets. Certainly worth a look.
The Crans-Sur-Sierre Golf Club plays host to the European Masters this year. The course is a Par 70 over 6823 yards with three Par 5s and it requires a very different set of skills to the courses we are used to on the DP World Tour. This golf course is set at a high altitude, which makes the ball travel much further. This means the players won't be able to use their drivers off the tee as much as usual. Achieving a decent score here requires intense course management from start to finish, placement off the tee being a key factor.
For players to do well around here, they will need to be good at scrambling, as getting up and down from around these greens will be essential. In terms of stats this week, you need a good iron player who hits plenty of greens in regulation and controls their distance well, but also has a good short game too. Even though a lot of big names have taken this event in recent years, it would be no surprise to see a shock result. This is a superb course to look at, but a tough one to play.
My best bet for the week is the very talented Joost Luiten who ticks all of the boxes for this week’s event. He is an excellent iron player and very reliable with a putter in his hand too, making the 40/1 on offer for him huge value. He is incredibly consistent with his irons and his golf swing is very repeatable, which is something I want on side this week. He plays a pretty straight iron shot with his irons, give or take a yard of fade, so hitting these greens should be no problem for him.
He seems to have found his form again in recent weeks, despite playing at courses which have not really suited his game. However, this course is absolutely made for Joost, so I think he will play very well indeed.
Compared to some of the big names in the field, Joost represents excellent value, and he is definitely good enough to mix it with them too. His calm nature, his experience and his seriously good iron game will all stand him in good stead this week and I really fancy his chances.
My second pick is Jorge Campillo, another player who has found his form again recently. He is a deceptively good golfer and his iron play is up there with the best on the DP World Tour. He played really well in the British Masters last week and he won the Magical Kenya Open for us last year, at an iron-dominated course very similar to this one.
Along with having a good iron game, Jorge is also one of the best putters on Tour. He has been playing more on the PGA Tour of late, where he has proven many times that he can still play well under pressure. Like Joost, Jorge Campillo ticks a lot of the right boxes here and the 40/1 on offer is incredibly generous based on his strongest credentials. This course really suits his game well on paper, and if he turns up in the same form he was in last weekend, then I expect him to be right in the thick of things here.
