The PGA Tour is off to Georgia this week for the RSM Classic. The two players I have picked for this week’s event both offer a combination of strong iron play, and a very consistent short game. Beyond that, they have both hit some really good form, and just at the right time! Both look ready to play very well in this week’s PGA tournament, and I am expecting a big performance.
I couldn’t find any better prices, and with eight places up for grabs, William Hill easily makes number one on my bookie list. Also, if you sign up as a new member, and bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. Longshots to follow soon, so if you don’t already have an account, then this is truly a great deal!
The RSM Classic is a PGA Tour event that takes place over two different golf courses: The Seaside Course and The Plantation Course. Both are a part of the Sea Island Golf Club and require very similar skills from players.
The Seaside Course is a Par 70 over 7005 yards and this course has the appearance and feel of a links-style course. The Plantation Course is a Par 72 and runs to a slightly longer 7060 yards, and is more of a parkland type of course. Despite their very different looks, they have a lot of similar assets. Both require a skilled iron player, but a really solid short game is essential too. A player who can make the most of those attributes this week has a decent chance of getting competitive.
My first pick is world number 155 Andrew Novak, who comes into this event in very good form. He finished second at the Bermuda Championship last weekend, and has been improving all season long, so it’s only a matter of time until he breaks his PGA Tour maiden. He is a player who can perform well at a variety of differently styled golf courses, and I think he is an ideal candidate for this event.
Novak has had five Top 10 finishes this season, and he has the ability to score really low, which is crucial around here and that is largely due to his excellent short game. He is superb with his wedges and has continued to putt well in recent weeks, so he seems somewhat overpriced for this week’s event. There are some big names in this field, but I think Andrew Novak has gone under the radar, despite finishing runner up last week, and he looks all set for another big week on the PGA Tour.
Next on my list is Davis Thompson. He is an exceptionally talented player who got his first win on the PGA Tour in the John Deere Classic back in July. His form did drop off slightly for a couple of events after his win, but that is more than understandable and happens to a lot of players. However he bounced back with a very good effort in the Shriners Open, playing four really good rounds in the 60s and finishing in a tie for fifth place.
That event took place at TPC Summerlin - a course that requires similar skills as the two he will play on this week. Davis Thompson is a player who is only going to get better with game time, and I think the variation of two different courses this week will actually help his style of play. I am rather sweet on his chances this week and believe he could be ready to add PGA Tour win number two to his resume.
