It’s almost time for the 124th US Open to tee off and this year the event will be hosted by the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club. I have selected three players that I think are well-suited to this course and all of them are ready to put on a big performance.
Last year I put up Wyndham Clark, who went on to win the event at a massive 80/1. I have a player at even bigger odds this year who has a very similar profile to Wyndham and I’d love to make it back-to-back winning tips for the US Open. Along with my triple-priced pick, I also have two players that are shorter in the market, but are both very solid options for this week.
Pinehurst is a notoriously difficult course and along with needing a good game to win here, players will also need to remain patient too throughout the week, as it’s sure to throw up some bogeys along the way. Scottie Scheffler obviously deserves a mention considering his form this season, and I won’t deny that he will take a lot of beating. However, at 11/4 he is way too short for me to back in a field of 156 players.
To celebrate out third Major of the season, I have put together an extra set of longshot betting tips for you, which features three very worthy US Open contenders at ridiculously big prices, so make sure that you check those out as well. Otherwise, I am really looking forward to this event getting started and seeing what my 2024 US Open squad are made of.
I’ll be placing my US Open golf bets with BetUK, who also have a handy free bet deal up for grabs. Bet £10, and you’ll get £30 in free bets. With my longshot picks for the US Open coming up next, it pays to have some ammunition at the ready.
Pinehurst is set to host the US Open for the first time since 2014, when Martin Kaymer won the event, and it is very exciting to see the Tour return to this fantastic venue. It’s a Par 70 over 7550 yards, with just two Par 5s through the 18 holes, which provides a true test for the field. Getting up and down here is absolutely crucial, because it’s incredibly hard to hit the greens in regulation on this course.
Even though the short game is going to be a big focus this week, I would also put a lot of emphasis on players that can hit the ball both ways. Having the skill to do this will open up more attacking opportunities on some of the Par 4s, and that is a big, big advantage this week. Pinehurst is an extremely difficult course with a lot of thick rough and a lot of bogey's so you need a player with patience, a strong iron game, and plenty of class with the short clubs too. It will take a seriously good performance to win the US Open this week and we look all set for an absolute cracker.
My number one pick for the US Open is Colin Morikawa. He’s a player I’ve liked for a long time and he really seems to be finding his game again in recent months. He has the ability to hit the ball both ways, which is a big plus, and I have been really impressed with his iron game of late. All he really needs is a decent start to give him some momentum. Since the Masters he has achieved some very decent results, including four top 10s, one of which was a fourth in the Charles Schwab. As I write this, he is also in a tie for second place in the Memorial Tournament and going along nicely. In fact, everything finally seems to be coming together for Colin Morikawa, and this course will suit him better than most. There are a lot of players very easy to back in this year's US Open, but I give Colin Morikawa the edge, based on his recent run of excellent form.
My second selection Bryson Dechambeau, who is seemingly suited to most courses and I think he could really take advantage of Pinehurst this week. He has all aspects of the game in his bag when he is on form, and is clearly good enough to compete with the best in the world on his day too. He may be a tad short at 18/1, but out of the main protagonists, I feel he is definitely one to have on side. Bryson is a player capable of going really low, and although he can throw in the odd bad round, the majority of the Pinehurst players are going to have one anyway, so it doesn’t worry me too much. When Bryson gets on a roll he is hard to stop and if he is fast out the gates this week, he could play a leading role in the US Open this week.
Denny McCarthy is one of the players I put up for the US Open right at the beginning of the season, at which point he was priced at 250/1. He has made it onto my final list of players too, and he’s currently in the market at 125/1. He will need to bring his best game this week, but he is extremely well-suited to Pinehurst, and with his superb short game, he has to be considered. His style reminds me a lot of Wyndham Clark, who won this event last year and Denny will be very keen to boost his career by taking his first Major, so I think it could be a very good week to side with him.
