My best bets for Clonmel on Thursday

The big names are starting to come out of the shadows and for tomorrow’s racing at Clonmel I am putting up two horses who have major potential going forward. Both are Hurdlers and come two of the most powerful yards in Ireland right now.

Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott are both finding winners all over the show at the moment and I think they both have huge chances of picking up yet more prize money tomorrow. The ground is on the soft side currently, which is something that both of my selections will relish, so hopefully we have a good day on the horizon.

13.12 Clonmel - Maiden Hurdle 2m 3f

Here we have a lovely lineup of horses and several with a lot of potential. However, my shout is for Chapeau De Soleil who is running for Willie Mullins. This horse went to Willie in the hope that he would star as a Bumper horse, but that didn’t really work out.

He won a 3m Point-to-Point as a four-year-old, before moving yards, and came second in a decent Bumper at Fairyhouse towards the end of 2022 but then had a long time away from the track. When I saw him run at the Festival, he looked awkward, but I think the summer break will have helped and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a big step forward from him this season.

He does have a lot to prove and we are taking a chance by backing him, but he is a young horse who needs to progress and he has every chance of turning into a decent Hurdler. The step up in trip will help and I am going to give him a opportunity to turn it around here.

13:47 Clonmel - Handicap Hurdle 2m

Absolute Notions and Cash Back are fighting it out for favouritism in this Handicap Hurdle, but to me, Absolute Notions should be odds on for this race, despite giving weight all round. Cash Back is an 11-year-old now whilst Absolute Notions is only five and open to plenty.

He cost £370k and showed a decent level of form on his Hurdles debut with a win at Fairyhouse last season. He was long odds that day, but he looked like a horse that will be going places this season. In fact, I think he has the potential to be a real class act and even though he is giving weight to Cash Back, I think Absolute Notions will take some stopping here.
