  • Betting Tips for all seven races on Day 3
  • Win and EW selections for St Patrick’s Day

Tons of competitive action on Day 3 of the Festival

We move swiftly on to Day 3 and the highlight here is the Stayers’ Hurdle. It is always a very competitive race and I have a strong selection for this year's renewal. The first five home last year all line up again, but I think we will see a different winner this time around.

However, my best betting tip for St Patrick’s Day comes in the Mares’ Novice Hurdle a little later in the day. I will be doubling her up with my fancy for the Stayers’ Hurdle, and with a little bit of Irish luck, we could be in for a very good day. Let’s get this show on the road.

£60 of free bets courtesy of BetMGM

Don’t overlook this massive Cheltenham offer from BetMGM. You only need to bet £10, and you’ll get £60 in free bets. Time is moving swiftly on, so get in quick to enjoy this deal for the second two days of Festival.

13:30 The Turners Novices’ Chase 2m 4f

The Turners is the opening race on Day 3 and the market has changed a huge amount since the going has officially changed to Soft (Heavy in palaces).

Ginny's Destiny was at the top of the betting for months, but he has now drifted right out, as he is not best known as a mud-wallower. Despite the fact that the ground has gone somewhat against him, he is a fantastic jumper and that could be sufficient to keep him competitive here.

Grey Dawning is one I really like. The ground is very much in his favour, and he has stamina in buckets. Although his jumping could do with a bit of tidying up, I genuinely think that he’s capable of putting on a winning performance.

Facile Vega has been hugely supported, which comes as no surprise whatsoever, as the Willie Mullins team are absolutely flying this week, and well on their way to make it to 100 Festival winners.

GJ Verdict

I haven’t got the strongest opinion in this race, but Grey Dawning has a huge chance if he can keep his jumping together, so I just about give him the edge over Facile Vega here.

  • Win: Grey Dawning
  • EW: Facile Vega

14:10 Pertemps Handicap Hurdle 3m

The Pertemps is always one of the most notable Handicap races at the Cheltenham Festival. It always turns out to be a fantastic watch and it’s hugely competitive. The two at the head of the market are Cuthbert Dibble and Cleatus Poolaw, who have very similar profiles and both will relish the deep conditions.

However, I have two selections placed ahead of the front pair. Icare Allen was given a very gentle ride at Aintree last time out, so I know that he will be primed for this race. The plan was to get him well-handicapped and it has succeeded, as he runs off a mark of 142, so I think he will go very close here.

However, the winner for me is the six-year-old mare Gaoth Chuil, who won a Pertemps qualifier at Leopardstown over Christmas, followed up by an absolute blinder at the Dublin Racing Festival. She is still open to plenty running off a mark of 136, and looks just the sort to relish the Cheltenham conditions and undulations.

GJ Verdict

Gaoth Chuil definitely ticks all of the boxes here for me, and I can’t see her getting beaten. However, I also have a great deal of respect for Icare Allen and with his current mark, he’s the main danger to my selection.

  • Win: Gaoth Chuil
  • EW: Icare Allen

14:50 Ryanair Chase 2m 5f

The Ryanair is a very open renewal this time around. The ground has definitely gone against Banbridge, who needs a faster surface to perform well, so this seriously affects his chances. Envoi Allen is back to try and win his second Ryanair Chase and he is the one they all need to beat if he turns up in the same form again. That said, he is a 10-year-old now, so it’ not a given that he can replicate last year's effort.

Fil D’Or is an interesting candidate. He is only just six, but he already has some very decent form in the book. He has run two very good races this season, finishing second on both occasions, but those losses were to Dinoblue and El Fabiolo repectively, so the form is most certainly franked.

He may even prove a better horse over this longer trip too, as he is still very much unexposed. But ultimately, the winner for me is Stage Star, for Paul Nicholls, who is a fantastic jumper on his day. He won last year’s Turners Novices’ Chase and has looked good this season too.

GJ Verdict

Off the back of his form alone, Stage Star ticks all of the right boxes for me. He will be coming here nice and fresh too, so I think he will be hard to beat. And based on his progress so far, I can easily see Fil D’Or being next in line at the finish.

  • Win: Stage Star
  • EW: Fil D’or

15:30 Stayers Hurdle 3m

My Next Best bet on Day 3 comes in the highlight race, the Stayers’ Hurdle which is sure to be a fantastic watch.  Sire De Berlais won this last year, and he is back again bidding to retain his title. However, he is 12 years old now, and he has undeniably slowed down a little. And the same could be said about Paisley Park, who has also won this race previously. They are both in the final years of their respective racing careers, but it would be no surprise to see them on the premises.

Crambo is an excellent each way prospect for sure. He is a fast improver and has likely to come on again after his last run which puts him right in the mix here, and he has a nice turn of foot too. But I think the most likely winner of this race is Teahupoo, for Gordon Elliott. He was second last year, despite making a massive mistake at the second last and finding trouble on the run in, finishing within a length of the winner.

GJ Verdict

At seven years of page, Teahupoo is in his prime and he already has the Grade 1 Hattons Grace to his credit this season, I think he’s the one to beat here, but a great each way shout for the up and coming Crambo.

  • Win: Teahupoo (NB)
  • EW: Crambo

16:10 Plate Handicap Chase 2m 4f

The 2024 renewal of The Plate is especially competitive and it will be a decent betting race too. Il Ridoto is a very solid horse and he has some good form here at Cheltenham too, which is always helpful in these big races. I fully expect to see him in the places here. Shakem Up’Arry represents the local Ben Pauling team. He has been very well supported this week and is another with good Cheltenham course form. He won here in January in very similar conditions and he will not be far away with a repeat effort.

However, the one that has caught my eye here, is In Excelsis Deo, for Harry Fry, who is very well-handicapped indeed. He went off favourite last time out at Sandown, and was well supported. He was in a good position when he unfortunately unseated his jockey, so we didn’t get to see too much. But I will overlook that, especially as he already has Cheltenham form in his favour.

GJ Verdict

Based on his Cheltenham form and the fact that he is relatively unexposed, my marginal preference here is In Excelsis Deo, but I’m fairly certain that Shakem Up’Arry will be the one to chase him over the line.

  • Win: In Excelsis Deo
  • EW: Shakem Up’Arry

16:50 Mares Novice Hurdle 2m

My NAP of the day comes here in the Mares’ Novice Hurdle and the market probably has this spot on, as I see this being a race between the top three in the betting.

Dysart Enos represents Fergal O’Brien, and she is a fantastic mare. She has been campaigned to run here without a penalty, which is a big advantage, but she is coming up against a much better crop of horses here compared to those she has encountered during her Cheltenham campaign.

Brighterdaysahead is the current favourite and she is a very impressive looking sort, but I think she’ll do better when she goes up in trip. I think the one to beat here is Jade De Grugy. She has been nothing short of spectacular this season, and already has Graded form in the book.

GJ Verdict

Jade De Grugy looks like the fastest of the top three over the two-mile trip and I think she has this race in the bag. Due respect to Brighterdaysahead though, I just think she needs to go further, but I still see her firmly in the mix here.

  • Win: Jade De Grugy (NAP)
  • EW: Brighterdaysahead

17:30 Kim Muir 3m 2f

The Kim Muir is a race where I rarely have a strong opinion, but this year, we have a very competitive renewal coming up. Inothewayurthinking has been well supported, but I think he’s priced too short considering he hasn’t won over fences before, so I’m going to take him on here.

So my choice here is last year's winner Angels Dawn, who has been nicely campaigned for this race. He is up 10lbs from last year's win, but he ran a blinder in the Thyestes last time out and that was a much-improved performance. I won't be at all surprised if he racks up his second Kim Muir win tomorrow.

GJ Verdict

My selection here is Angels Dawn. He’s had an excellent campaign this season and I think the Kim Muir is the final piece of his puzzle. I won’t take anything away from Inothewayurthinking though, he’s a big player, but I rate him below Angels dawn this time.

  • Win: Angels Dawn
  • EW: Inothewayurthinking
