We have more DP World Tour golf action this week with the BMW International Open returning to Munchen Golf Club for the fifth consecutive season. For me, this is one of the best courses the players will face all season and it will take a really positive performance to win around here.
Last year's winner was Thriston Lawrence, who returns to defend his title after three weeks off the golf course and he will probably fancy his chances. The last time he played was in the European Open, where he started with a poor opening round of 77. But he wasn’t daunted, he managed to up his game with three rounds in the 60s and ended up finishing in a tie for second. The break has probably done him plenty of good and I think he has a fair chance of retaining his 2023 title, but I’m going to take him on this week.
Before we go on to my betting tips for this week, just a reminder that I will also have some longshots picks coming your way. They’ve done us proud over the last few weeks, so make sure you check back in for those.
At the time of writing, there are no prices available for this week’s golfing event, but as Coral is always reliable for places and prices when it comes to golf events, that’s where I’ll be heading. In addition, you can also grab yourself a great deal if you don’t already have an account.
Bet £5, and you’ll get £20 in free bets. Surely a win-win situation!
The DP World Tour heads to Germany this week for the BMW International Open at the Munchen Golf Club and we are set for a superb event. This is very much a risk-and-reward golf course where you can score low, but more importantly, you need to play smart, as one mistake around here can leave you staring a bogey in the face.
The course is a Par 72 over 7347 yards, making it one of the longest courses on the DP World Tour circuit and it is a real test of golf for the field this week. It has four Par 5s which are both achievable, but the difficulty comes with the Par 3s, with three of them stretching way over 200 yards. Any players who make pars on these holes won’t be giving away shots to the field that's for sure.
The greens at Munchen Golf Club are very big, but often have two or three levels - making it imperative to have a player with good distance control, particularly with their irons. Having your approach shots land on the flat spots of the green this week is a big positive and leads to more birdie opportunities, giving a distinct advantage over those that don’t control their distances with their approach shots. Whatever happens, this will be a fascinating event and it will take a real class player to win around this course.
My first pick for this week is world number 93, Rasmus Hojgaard, who is an extremely talented player. He will inevitably be short enough in the betting, but based on his credentials, it will definitely be justified and I am sweet on his chances this week. He is a seriously good driver of the ball, his iron game has improved again this year, and in recent weeks his short game has been trending in the right direction too.
Rasmus has previously shown a tendency to get quite frustrated off the back of poor shots. However,
he has a new coach now, and has been working hard on his mental game, trying to remain more patient in pressure situations. He had a poor start in the KLM Open, but battled back well to finish fourth and that was a big step back in the right direction for him. I believe that was a turning point for Rasmus, and I think he suits this course better than most this week..
Selection number two is world number 62, Ryan Fox, who plays a mix of events across the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour. This week he returns to the DPWT to play the International Open and to me, he has every chance of winning this event. His iron game is superb, which suits this golf course and he has a very repeatable swing, which brings consistency into his game whilst being deceptively long off the tee to go with it.
Ryan has spent the majority of this season on the PGA Tour and he has had some good results. He is also a four-time winner on the DP World Tour and his experience will bode well for him here. He has excellent distance control, his best results have been at these longer golf courses and he is definitely one of the standout players in this week’s field. Ryan will also be short in the betting, but he fits the bill for this week and if he turns up in good form he should go very close indeed.
