Welcome back everyone. We’re back on the DPWT again this week for the Italian Open, which will be hosted by the Adriatic Golf Club for the very first time. The three previous renewals of this event were held at Marco Simone, which also staged last year's Ryder Cup, so it’s no surprise to see the Tour switch it up this time around. It looks like a fantastic venue and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed studying this new addition to the DP World Tour.
Last year’s winner was Adrian Meronk, but he won't be playing this week due to commitments on the LIV Golf Tour, which leaves the contest a little more open this time. Guido Migliozzi will lead the charge for the home players, after winning last week’s KLM Open. He definitely has a decent chance again this week, but we have a very strong field here and I am rather sweet on my two selections, so hopefully we can end up in profit again.
But before we move onto this week’s betting tips, just a reminder that for every DP World Tour event, I will also be bringing you some longshots picks to consider. This feature has proved popular in recent weeks with some nice results, which hopefully we can replicate through the season.
I’ll be using Bet365 for my golf betting this week and if you don’t have an account there already, then it’s worth knowing that they have a decent free bet deal up for grabs. If you sign up and
bet £10, you’ll get £30 of free bets. It's the ideal way to cover my best bets and my longshot selections.
The DP World Tour heads to the Adriatic Golf Club this week for the 81st edition of the Italian Open. This is the first time the club has hosted a DP World Tour event and the layout of the course is absolutely fantastic. There’s a wide range of hole types for the players to navigate and I’m sure we’re going to see a very exciting finish on Sunday.
The course is a Par 70 over 6965 yards which is largely dominated by Par 4s with just two Par 5s, and it’s not a course that can be overpowered either. Although there’s plenty of room off the tee, the players will need precision with their approach play to attack these well designed greens. Ball flight isn’t a big focus here, but those who have a nice high trajectory could benefit, as their approach shots are more likely to land softly.
The greens are all very much on the fast side this week, so the players who are on point with their short game will gain a further advantage. You need to be something of an all rounder to win here, and in that respect it’s very similar to last week’s KLM Open, but the course itself brings a whole new set of challenges.
My best bet for this week’s Italian Open is Julien Guerrier, which might come as a bit of a surprise to you. He has been playing some very solid golf of late and he will really appreciate the style of this golf course. I’ve been watching him closely over the last few weeks and he has definitely upped his game considerably, posting some solid scores along the way. You don’t necessarily need to be a flashy player to win this week, but players with a high ball flight and a good short game suit nicely and Julien definitely has both attributes.
He is currently world number 176, which is up there with the better players in this field, but he is yet to win a DP World Tour title. That doesn’t concern me though,
it’s clear he has the game to win one of these events and he always plays well at tough courses with a lot of Par 4s. There are not many players who are ideally suited to this course, but Julien Guerrier ticks a lot of boxes, and I’m willing to take a chance on him at a decent each way price.
My second selection is nine-time DP World Tour winner Pablo Larrazabal, who should also be well suited to this Par 4-dominated track. He generally plays at his best on courses where approach play is key, and I can see him playing some really good golf here. His short game is as good as ever and he generally doesn’t make too many mistakes in that department, which is a much-needed attribute around this type of golf course.
Pablo won last year’s KLM Open in good style, but missed the cut last week. To put that into perspective, the International Golf Club is an entirely different kettle of fish and one not entirely suited to his style of play. He was far from disgraced though, putting up rounds of 73 and 72, so nothing to worry about. He is sure to feel far more comfortable playing at the Adriatic Golf Club this week and I fancy him to go well in search of his tenth DP World Tour title.
