Saturday is here – and we’re off to Newmarket again

It must be said that Saturday is my favourite day of the week, work done, it’s time to kick back and enjoy the racing. This week it's all about the July Meeting at Newmarket, so once again, that’s my destination for Saturdays winning picks.

I’m especially looking forward to tomorrow’s Newmarket action actually, as there are some really big match ups coming up, which you really don’t want to miss seeing live if you can.

14:15 Newmarket - Fillies Handicap 7f

Candle Of Hope @ 7/2

The Fillies’ Handicap is a lovely looking race, with some very nicely-profiled contenders. Desert Voice is the favourite for the Haggas team but there’s no guarantee she will step up enough to win this race on a slightly slower surface, so I think she’s a little bit skinny in the betting. Chasseral is a nicely bred Juddmonte filly and she has to be the main danger in this field. She ran well on her first start over seven furlongs and she could have come on for that again.

My selection here though, is Candle Of Hope for Richard Hughes and Ryan Moore. She ran a cracking race in the Sandringham, to finish in fifth place over a mile, so the slight drop back in trip to seven furlongs looks ideal to me. She’s going to really enjoy these conditions and the form of her Royal Ascot run bodes very well for her here.

14:50 Newmarket - Bet365 Mile Handicap 1m

Quantum Impact EW @ 11/2

The Bet 365 Mile is another canny Handicap that is likely to be very competitive. Ryan Moore is likely to get a good tune out of Havana Blue here and should go close. Tafreej, although impressive last time out, will need to prove he can do it in a deeper field, but obviously looks well-treated too.

However the one that keeps catching my eye is Quantum Impact for Ralph Beckett. He has shown some strong signs of ability in his running and is the one that gets my vote. He ran in the Britannia, but was given an awful ride that day. Even though he wasn’t exactly well drawn, switching to go to the far rail meant he had to travel significantly further than some of his rivals.

However, he won in good fashion at York the time before that and with a more conventional ride here, we should see him put his best foot forward again. He’s a bit on the short side for an each way bet at 11/2, but this is a very competitive race and it gives us a bit of insurance.

16:35 Newmarket - July Cup Stakes 6f

Kinross @ 11/4

The July Cup Stakes is undoubtedly a great race on paper and Shaquille, who stands unbeaten this season, has rapidly become one of my favourite Flat horses in training. But he definitely needs to get away much smoother than he did in the Commonwealth Cup to do well here. Little Big Bear was beaten by Shaquille in that same race and has a decent chance of reversing the form, but this time, I’m looking elsewhere.

The one that stands out for me this time, is the tough and honest Ralph Beckett runner, Kinross, who should find things much more straightforward than most in this field. In my opinion, Azure Fly is his main danger, with that one being on such an upward curve, but my money is on Kinross and with William Buick taking the ride, I believe he is the one will take all of the beating.

Last week we had a strong week on the selections, this week not so much. The Lucky 15 for Friday didn’t start off the best, with three losing bets, but we salvaged that a little bit when Good Earth won for us, advised at 12/1. There was a Rule 4 in the race, which reduced our profits a little, but it was great to get that one on the board.
