Betting tips for Carlisle and Ludlow

I have two selections for Thursday that I think are worth a punt, one runs at Carlisle and the other is over at Ludlow. Both of these horses are well-handicapped for their first starts of this season and they are both very much open to improvement.

15:20 Carlisle - Handicap Hurdle 2m 1f

I can see plenty of nice types in this Handicap Hurdle. The market is headed by Lucinda Russell’s Thereisnodoubt, who won at Perth on his seasonal debut, but I’m not convinced he can back that performance up here. Golden Glance is a really nice filly for the Oli Greenall team, but she’s coming up against some older and more experienced geldings here, so she may not have quite enough experience. That said, she is a danger nonetheless.

So, I think the one to side with is the seven-year-old Gardner, who runs for Alex Hales. He is a very likeable type, who remains unexposed and his best performances have always come on a softer surface which he will get here. He ticks all the right boxes for me on his seasonal debut.

15:30 Ludlow - Handicap Chase 3m

Here, we have a very decent small-field Handicap Chase to look at. The seven-year-old Outlaw Peter, from the Paul Nicholls yard sets the standard and he is clearly a nice horse to go forward with. However, I have a bit of a soft spot for the Nigel Twiston-Davies runner, The Kniphand.

He may only be five-years-old, but he is turning into a very nice horse and one who is open to any amount of improvement. I’m hoping that he can take advantage of his low mark here and use his turn of foot to finish the race if he gets into a battle with one of the top weights. He has clearly been ready to go for a few weeks now and I can see him running a very nice race indeed.
