Golfing fans, we move on to 2024 Major number two, as the US PGA Championship gets set to start at Valhalla this week. We have an ultra-competitive lineup, as you’d expect and Scottie Scheffler is just 4/1 to make it two wins in two Majors for 2024. It really would be no surprise to see him win the Wanamaker Trophy this week to be honest, but from a betting perspective, he is way too short for me to punt here.
Anyhow, I have three selections that I think are going to give Scottie a serious run for his money this week. This is a very tough course to play and the first credential I am looking for is accurate ball strikers, because they are generally the more consistent types and that would be a requirement this week for sure. Last week we had the Wells Fargo Championship and we managed to get two selections into the places so it was a profitable week, and a perfect preparation for the second Major of the season.
This week, Coral are offering a huge 12 places for the US PGA Championship, and if you don’t already have an account with them, then they have a great deal for new sign ups too. If you
bet £5, you’ll get £20 in free bets. Coral are consistently fair with their price and place terms, so this is definitely worthy of your attention.
The 2024 US PGA Championship takes place at the Valhalla Golf Club, which is a par 71 over 7609 yards. And believe you me, this course is set out to be very tough indeed. It probably gives the longer hitters a slight advantage off the tee, but they will not want to lose accuracy for the sake of a few extra yards, so I won’t worry about finding big hitters, I’ll be looking for accurate ball strikers, because they will generally find themselves with more birdie opportunities. The rough can be quite tricky around Valhalla, especially greenside, so you need a player that has a bit of class in their short game too, but it really is a course for the all-rounders.
The last time the US PGA Championship was held at Valhalla was all the way back in 2014, where Rory Mcilroy took the Wanamaker Trophy and a lot are likely to fancy his chances here this week, based on that, especially after his winning performance in the Wells Fargo last week, but that doesn’t mean he can do it again.
If you look at other courses Rory has won at, that sort of course form angle just doesn't correlate, meaning he doesn’t go back to courses and repeat big efforts very often. I fully acknowledge he has a chance based on his ability, but that’s all for me. I think I have found some much better selections at much bigger prices this week, and I am feeling very confident about my squad of players.
My first selection for the US PGA Championship is Tommy Fleewood and I think his time to win a Major has come. He is an excellent ball striker, who has a lovely soft draw ball flight, and that is definitely the preferred shape shot around Valhalla. Tommy Fleetwood gets a lot of criticism for not having won a Major yet. but he has finished in the Top 5 in all four Major events and I think that’s a very positive sign.
He has been slowly coming to the boil this season, so perhaps he has been playing the patient game for a while and getting ready to strike at Valhalla. He is a seriously good ball hitter, which is something I want to see, because the better ball strikers are likely to hit more greens in regulation around here. But
not only is Tommy strong from tee to green, he is also underestimated with a putter in his hand. He ticks a lot of boxes this week and even though he is only 30/1 to win I believe he has a fine chance in this field.
My next betting tip for the US PGA Championship is one of my favourite players, which Wyndham Clark. He won the Wells Fargo Championship last season, before going on to win the US Open and he hasn’t stopped progressing as a playersince. I will admit that he was not at his best in this year’s Wells Fargo, but he was consistent enough and I would give him a chance of bouncing back here at Valhalla.
He has plenty of length, and a decent short game to go with it, so he is surely overpriced here considering he is ranked as the fourth best player in the world. Wyndham actually hits a left-to-right shot shape as his preference, which isn’t ideal here, but he has managed fine at similar courses. I think with his class, and at a price of 35/1, you have to take a piece.
My final pick for the US PGA is world number eight Patrick Cantlay, who has yet to win a Major, but has certainly been trending in the right direction over the last couple of seasons. When I was looking through the PGA Tour schedule at the beginning of the year, there were two Majors that I thought he would have a serious chance in and this is the first of them.
Valhalla requires a lot of patience, we know he has that in abundance and his final round of 69 in the Wells Fargo was superb, a real turning point in fact. Despite Patrick Cantlay being a player who I haven’t really taken too previously, he ticks a lot of boxes here, and he is way overpriced this week at 45/1. I think he is going under the radar this week and has a big chance.
Tommy Fleetwood @ 30/1
Wyndham Clark @ 35/1
Patrick Cantlay @ 45/1
