While there’s some fantastic racing action at Doncaster on Day 2 of the St Leger Festival, I’m drawn to a horse at Sandown that I simply cannot ignore. I think this one will enjoy today’s conditions, he is very well handicapped, and his trainer’s record in the race is eye-catching. I think he’s underestimated at 8/1, and if he bounces back to form, he could make that price look silly.
If you’re new to my articles, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing tipster here at Betting.co.uk. I typically post four articles per week but this will shortly increase to five! They are mostly daily betting tips, but you’ll also find antepost tips, guides, and big race trends too.
If antepost tips caught your interest there, then you may want to check out my existing tips here. There is one for the Doncaster Cup Stakes, which is being run today! As well as that, I have selections for the Irish Champion Stakes, the Cesarewitch Handicap, and the King George VI Chase this year. For 2026, I have already looked ahead to the Cheltenham Festival and the Aintree Grand National.
At the time of writing, only a few bookmakers are offering 8/1 on Blue For You, and Betway is one of them. As well as the fantastic value on the odds, thre’s also a great sign up offer for new customers. If you sign up and bet £10, they’ll match it with a £10 free bet. Effectively you get to double your betting power, and that’s well worth taking them up on!
Blue For You looks to have a fantastic chance in what is arguably a weaker race than he is used to contesting. In this article, I’ll be breaking down my reasons as to why I think you should back him today, so make sure you read on to understand my logic.
I find it very interesting that the last two renewals of this race have been won by David O’Meara’s horses. In 2023, Azano won under Daniel Tudhope, despite having his blindfold taken off late. In 2024, Darkness made it back to back renewals for David O’Meara, despite being hampered at the start.
Trainers can be creatures of habit and they like to target the same races. So I’m not at all surprised that David O’Meara is trying to make it a hat trick of wins in the race by sending the very well handicapped Blue For You to contest it on his behalf.
Blue For You has won five times during his career, and the last four of those wins have come in Handicap company. His wins have come off marks of 91, 96, 99 and 95. Not only that, they produced very strong RPRs of 100, 109, 109 and 104. In essence, Blue For You is undoubtedly very well handicapped off a mark of just 89, assuming he can return to his best form.
I do appreciate that he is seven now, and I also find it a little concerning that they have applied a tongue tie for his last two races. This suggests connections may be concerned about his wind, especially as he had previous wind surgery in October 2023. However, at a price of 8/1, and off such a low mark compared to his potential ability, he simply cannot be ignored.
What is Blue For You’s best trip? Well that is open to debate in my opinion. His Maiden win came over 7f, but all four of his Handicap victories have come over the 1m trip. However, the last three of those wins have all been at York, which is a very flat track, and not one that would put too much emphasis on stamina.
It’s also notable that he has had seven runs this season, and his two best runs in terms of finishing position and RPR were both over 7f. On his reappearance run he finished third at Haydock off a mark of 97, producing a RPR of 100. Then on the fourth start of his campaign, he finished fifth at York, off a mark of 95, producing a RPR of 95.
If he can reproduce either of those performances dropped back to 7f, he must have a very strong chance off his reduced mark of 89. With juice in the ground, and the stiffness of the Sandown track, I think the fact that he can stay further is actually a huge bonus. Especially as it looks like this race will be run at a decent gallop. While others start to look for the line, I think he’ll be finishing off strongly, and hopefully with his nose in front!
In my opinion, there are a lot of positives for Blue For You today. His trainer has won the last two renewals of this race, he’s handicapped to strike, his best form has come over 7f this season, and the stiff 7f at Sandown should suit. He’s pretty versatile groundwise, but he does handle some juice in the ground, which there will be today. I also find it interesting that Daniel Tudhope has decided to come to Sandown for this ride, despite David O’Meara having two runners at Doncaster.
Now, I do appreciate Blue For You isn’t getting any younger, and he hasn’t been at his best this season, so we are relying on him bouncing back to form. I also have that small niggle over the application of a tongue tie for his last two races, which is also retained today, suggesting there could be concerns with his breathing.
Although Blue For You has some questions to answer, at a price of 8/1, I maintain he’s too big to ignore here. However, as we do have a couple of concerns, I’m only going half stakes today. Ultimately the question is whether Blue For You will turn up at his best. If he does, this doesn’t look a particularly deep race, and the fact that serial bridesmaid Billyjoh is favourite, speaks volumes. I genuinely think Blue For You has the ability to blow this 0-95 company away.
