We have a really good day of racing coming up on Friday, and I’ve got three betting tips for you from three different courses and all of them have strong chances. We start off in the Fillies Handicap at York where I have a well-handicapped type who ticks all the boxes, and I’ll be surprised if she doesn’t hit the frame.
Over at Chester I have a runner in the Close Brothers Handicap who has conditions to suit and should be a decent enough price to back each way. My final selection comes at Market Rasen over the sticks, and this gelding looks like he turned a corner on his latest start and is handicapped to run another big race.
Due to the highly-competitive nature of Friday’s racing, I advise small stakes each way singles for all of my picks and I’m hopeful that we can have a profitable day before we head into the weekend's action. On that note, I’ll be back soon with my Saturday selections and straight after the weekend, I’ll be concentrating solely on the 2024 Royal Ascot action.
There’s plenty happening on Friday, so why not grab some free bets from Ladbrokes to help you on your way. If you
bet £5, you’ll get £20 in free bets. As soon as your first bet settles, you’re good to go.
My first betting tip comes in a fiercely-competitive Fillies’ Handicap over at York, where there is a very classy lineup. Alfa Kellenic heads the betting for Craig Lidster and having beaten Bailey’s Polka Dot last time out by a convincing margin, she deserves to be favourite. However, that race was only a week ago, so I do have concerns about how much that took out of her. Katey Kontent and Jumbeau make plenty of appeal, but they are both up in the weights and there is no guarantee that either of them can get competitive off their current marks.
I believe the one to side with here is the Ed Walker-trained Midream, a four-year-old who has been steadily progressive and looks to me like the best horse in the race off level weights. There is a small question mark about how she handles the York undulations, but my gut feeling says that won’t be a big issue. Although this is a Handicap, her mark is well within the scope of her ability and she’s sure to be in the mix. Again, I’m advising an each way bet here, due to the competitive nature of this race, but I do genuinely feel that Midream has a winning chance here.
Next up we go to Chester for the 7f Handicap, where I have another each way poke. On paper, there are plenty with chances, assuming they all turn up in their best form. However, there are several other factors to consider. Firstly, we have four-year-olds here, who are up against older and more experienced horses and I think they could struggle. Secondly, Chester is a sharp left-handed course, where the draw bias usually favours the low numbers, but in this particular race I think it’s more important to have plenty of stamina on side.
Taking all of that into account, I’m siding with Brian Toomey’s
Wake Up Harry. He is by La Havre, who stayed beyond this trip, he is a strong traveller and he is an ultra-consistent sort who has been unlucky not to win more races.
This is his first time at Chester, but everything else is in his favour and the extra half furlong should play to his strengths. I can see him running a big race here, and he’s a strong each way shout.
For my final selection we head off to Market Rasen for the Handicap Hurdle, which is a very open race. Fantomas is a very consistent sort for the Twiston-Davies team, but he has been hard to win with, so backing him in this contest could be particularly risky. Top weight Kapamazov is a really intriguing runner for James Evans, and despite conceding weight all round, he must surely have a good chance with this marked drop in class.
However, I’m going to take a chance on Coilrock. He ran at Ludlow last month following a 129 day break, and put on a really impressive performance to finish second ahead of Fantomas. He was wearing cheekpieces for the first time, which seemed to have the desired effect, and he travelled nicely from the front, only getting caught in the final furlong. That performance definitely gives him something to build on and he is right at the bottom of the weights this time. Coilrock may well have turned a corner, and I think he has a very good chance here, but as this is a very competitive race, I'd recommend backing him each way.
