After two antepost selections so far this week, I’m switching it up and looking at today’s action for you. My betting tip runs in the 2m 0.5f Handicap at York, and I think he could massively outrun his huge odds!
If you are new to my content here, I typically post four articles per week. They are usually betting tips, but you’ll also see guides, big race trends and antepost tips occasionally. If you look back through my previous articles, you’ll find antepost picks for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Goodwood Cup and St Leger this year.
Then for 2026, I have already looked ahead to the Cheltenham Festival and the Grand National. While you still have plenty of time to back these horses, I recommend that you get on at the early prices for the best value. Meanwhile, make sure to tune back in tomorrow, as I'll have another betting tip for you then.
At the time of writing, William Hill are offering the best available price for Oslo at 22/1. I think that’s fantastic value and well worth taking. They also have superb value for new customers too. If you bet £10, they’ll give you £30 of free bets. Perfect for a weekend of racing action.
As a huge National Hunt fan, I always have a soft spot for dual-purpose horses and trainers, so it’s no surprise that I’m siding with Oslo today. It isn’t purely sentiment though, plenty of thought has gone into the decision to back him, and I’ll break my reasoning down for you here. While it’s usually Aidan O’Brien winning all of the Flat races, hopefully Fergal O’Brien can deliver a win for us here!
During his Flat career, Oslo has run over distances from 7f as a Juddmonte two-year-old, to 1m 6f in May of this year for Fergal O’Brien.
He usually stays on well in his Flat races, and he even did the same over the 1m 6f trip at Nottingham. He has also run at 2m 3.5f over Hurdles, where he stayed on well up the run-in eye-catching fashion.
Based on those observations, I feel this step up to 2m on the Flat is well worth exploring, and it could unlock more for him, enabling him to land his elusive first success on Turf (he has scored twice on the All Weather).
Considering Fergal O’Brien is a National Hunt trainer first and foremost, he has an eye-catching record at York with the limited runners he has sent up here.
His overall record at York is two wins, and one second place, from five runners, seeing him generate a profit of +£1.50 to £1 level stakes.
If you were to limit it to the last five years only, it becomes two wins and one second from four runners, seeing him generate a profit of +£2.50 to £1 level stakes.
While it is only a small sample size, I’m sure any Flat trainer would jump at the chance to be operating at those percentages.
If you were to explore the statistics for Fergal O’Brien, you would see that he performs exceptionally well when it comes to Stayers on the Flat. If you were to hazard a guess at the distances Fergal favours, being a dual purpose trainer, you would most likely guess staying trips. However, it did surprise me just how well he does in this sphere.
Fergal O’Brien is 12 out of 44 (27%) for 2m+ Flat races. A further fourteen horses have finished in the places, meaning 26 out of 44 (59%) of his runners have finished in the first four. To £1 level stakes, that’s a profit of +£18.45.
If you limit this to the last five years, it increases to 12/35 (34%) with 23/34 (68%) finishing in the first four. To £1 level stakes, his profit is a staggering +£27.45.
Finally, if we limit it to the current year only, he is 4/10 (40%), with 7/10 (70%) finishing in the first four. Although the percentages are stronger, the £1 level stakes profit does reduce, but is still an impressive +£13.33.
As you can see, Fergal O’Brien certainly shouldn’t be underestimated when he sends runners to a staying race on the Flat.
Considering all of the elements, I think Oslo has a far better chance in today’s race than the market suggests. I think there is every possibility he could make his 22/1 price tag look silly. Oslo shapes like he’ll enjoy the longest trip he’s faced on the Flat, and Fergal O’Brien excels with staying types on the Flat, as well as at York in general.
On the flip side, Oslo does need to confirm he stays 2m on the Flat, he can blow a bit hot and cold, plus he has a quick turnaround of just a few days to overcome. Factoring in these small concerns with him, I’m only prepared to play half stakes on this one.
The list below contains a handful of our bookmaker partners and details the free bet offers that they currently have available. If you don’t already have an account with any of them, I would highly recommend that you take a closer look at their offers and make the most of the value they provide.
