We’ve got another huge weekend ahead, but first I’ve got two betting tips for you for Friday - one from Doncaster and the other from the Newmarket evening card. They both have really solid chances and just one winner would give us a nice profit as we head towards the weekend.
Talking of which, it’s the Derby meeting over at the Curragh which has caught my attention. I’ll be covering some of the Saturday racing and I have some really strong fancies for you. In addition, I’ll be bringing you a runner-by-runner guide and 1-3-3 verdict for the 2024 Irish Derby on Sunday, so keep your eyes peeled for that too.
Before you place your first bet of the day, why not take advantage of this offer from BetMGM.
Bet £10, and you’ll get £40 in free bets. Perfect for the big Irish racing weekend ahead.
In the Trailblazers Handicap for the Stayers’, bottom weight Miss Gitana is sure to prove very popular for Sir Mark Prescott. She is a very unexposed sort who stays well, and we are accustomed to seeing Prescott’s runners excel over the longer trips. However, her running style puts me off and I am far from convinced that she is good enough to win here at this stage in her career. We also need to consider Night Horn, who was only just touched off over this trip last time out, and if given a slightly more patient ride this time could be seen to even better effect.
But that said, I’m siding with
Monsieur Melee, who looks open to plenty. He really impressed me when winning here last time out and clearly appreciated the step up to 1m 4f, so he looks well worth a crack at this extended trip off a mark of 74. He was in a handy position at one stage, but got shuffled to the back of the pack for a while, eventually finding a way through to win by a short margin.
Considering how much went wrong for him that day, he battled on really strongly and his winning distance could easily have been more
if things had gone a little more smoothly. He may drift a little in the betting due to some of the lightly-raced runners in the field, but I expect Monsieur Melee to take a lot of beating.
In the Fillies’ Handicap we only have five runners (which is somewhat disappointing) but all of them offer plenty of promise going forward. Rosy Affair is on a nice upward curve for George Boughey and she won well last time out. However, this is another step up in class for her, and she may just get found out here. Top weight is theJohn Gosden-trained. She offers strong form too, but has to give weight all round in this contest and has raced a little awkwardly in her last two starts. By rights, she should be bang there, but may prefer a slight step up in trip to be seen to full effect.
My pick here is Gutsy Girl, for Charlie Fellowes, who ran a big race at Windsor to finish second after a 300-day break. She was a little keen early on, but did settle eventually and despite having traffic problems, found plenty when she got the split. Without those mid-race issues I think she would have gone on to win comfortably and will likely improve again with her first run of the season behind her. In my opinion, Gutsy Girl looks set to improve past her rivals here and could well be one to keep on side for the future too.
