The final day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting looks set to bring us a brilliant day of competitive action and I have three betting tips for you. The first of them lines up for the Group 3 Glorious Stakes, and I think he has a massive chance of backing up his win last time out. He has clearly left his rather sketchy four-year-old form behind him, and looks like a much-improved horse this term.
My NAP bet of the day runs in the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes and I’ll be very surprised if this filly gets beaten. She sets a very strong standard here and a repeat of her latest run should see her prove too good for her rivals. In the final race of the day, we have a deep Handicap, where I’ve spotted an overpriced runner who looks certain to outrun his odds. He appears to have taken a liking to Goodwood, and with conditions on his side I am expecting a huge performance here.
Coral are the sponsors of today’s big Handicap race, and it just so happens that they have a very generous sign up offer available too. If you
bet £5, you’ll get £20 in free bets. Day 5 is here already, make the most of it!
We have just five runners in this year's Glorious Stakes, but it’s a decent enough lineup nonetheless. Aimeric is a really consistent performer, and even though he has been beaten by King Of Conquest on his last two starts, he did close the gap in his latest effort, so improvement could well be on the cards again. Al Aasy is another proven performer, but I was slightly disappointed by his seasonal debut and he would need to return to top form to be appealing at his current price.
I think the one to side with here is Phantom Flight, who beat Al Aasy last time out. He showed plenty of improvement based on his four-year-old form and seemed to have a much better attitude altogether. He travelled well throughout, and when asked to quicken, he did so without question. I don’t think there was any fluke about that performance. I believe he can actually show us more on his second start of the season. This slightly longer trip should be well within his range and I think this gelding is being seriously underestimated in this field.
On to the Lillie Langtry Stakes next, which is one for the fillies and mares. My NAP selection runs in this one, but first off, let's take a look at a couple of the other interesting runners. Caius Chorister has been a solid mare for connections, and off a mark of 109 she shouldn’t be far away again. She has found one too good on her last two starts though, and will need to find another gear at the finish to win this. Melo Melo comes over from France to run in this race, and based on her form she has a solid chance. But what concerns me most is that all of her best efforts have come on very soft ground, making her a bit of an unknown quantity on this much faster ground.
Whilst those two merit consideration,
Free Wind
is the bet of the day in my opinion. She is a multiple Group 2 winner and has shown bags of class on a going day. She finished second to Bluestocking in the Middleton Stakes last time out, and a repeat effort of that performance would see her tough to get past here.
She has a surprising turn of foot for a Stayer, and I don't think her rivals can live with it. Free Wind also has an official rating of 114, which sets the bar quite high in this field, and conditions to suit, I expect her to be very hard to beat.
The final race of the Glorious Goodwood meeting is the Coral Handicap, and I’m certain I’ve found some each way market value here. The current favourite is the Karl Burke-trained Native Warrior and there’s no denying that he makes plenty of appeal. But my main concern with him is that he is only a three-year-old, and taking on the older horses in a deep Handicap could potentially be asking too much from him. He is likely to be there or thereabouts, but I think he will find a few too good and his price is way too short on that basis.
In such a tricky contest, I’ve decided to take my chances with a decent each way shot. Which brings me to Sweet Reward, who is a course and distance winner, with a price tag that definitely doesn’t match up with his best form. He won here last season off a 3 lb lower mark, but has also been solid in defeat off marks a lot higher, which sees him well-handicapped for this race. The Goodwood track and fast ground look an ideal combination for him, and I think this race could have been the season-long plan for him. He generally travels well, and tactics don't seem to concern him either. I believe that Sweet Reward is well worth an each way poke in this contest.
