A mixed day for us on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood. Sir Busker was a no show after stumbling as he came out of the stalls. However, our main bet was the antepost play on Sweet William in the Goodwood Cup. He was well supported from 8/1 into 4/1, and he ran a very respectable third behind the two Ballydoyle horses, bringing a profitable return.
If you’re reading my articles for the first time today, I usually post four betting tips most weeks, but you’ll sometimes find other types of content too, including guides, big race trends and antepost picks. Speaking of antepost selections, I already have some posted for the 2025 St Leger, 2026 Cheltenham Festival and the 2026 Aintree Grand National, so go and get on at those early prices!
With Glorious Goodwood and the Galway Festival, I’m producing five articles this week. So check back in tomorrow, Friday and Saturday for more betting tips!
bet365 stands out today with the best price of 10/1 on Billyjoh, and five places on offer. As well as fantastic value on the price, they are also offering new customers a value bonus. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. Well worth considering if you don’t already have an account there!
Billyjoh has often been the bridesmaid in these big Handicaps, so he’s due a win and I think that could come today! In this article, I’ll explain why I think Billyjoh has a great chance today.
Billyjoh comes here off the back off a slightly underwhelming, but respectable, run at Ascot on Saturday, where he finished in eighth place. However, if you look back through the form book, you will notice he did exactly the same thing last year.
He ran in the same race at Ascot, finishing 10th before heading straight to this race, where he finished second after being sent off as the 4/1F.
What makes him even more interesting is that he went on to run at Glorious Goodwood again just three days later, finishing in third. It seems he can clearly handle quick turnarounds, and if anything, he seems to thrive on them.
If we look back through those races from last year, he ran at Ascot off a mark of 95, and he competed off that same mark when second and third in the two at Glorious Goodwood races. Across the three, he produced RPRs of 96, 103, and 104.
This time around he went to Ascot off a mark of 94, and he comes here off a 1lb lower mark of 93, which is 2lb lower than last year.
Considering the bounce back to form he showed last year, and the strong RPR of 103 produced, he is of strong interest today off a mark of 93. In fact, he looks very dangerously handicapped to me.
What I also find interesting is that his two runs at this track last year were his career best efforts judged on the 103 and 104 RPRs he produced. His next best performances at Southwell, Haydock, and Royal Ascot all produced a RPR of 100. So it’s safe to say he loves it here, and that is a huge bonus at this quirky track where previous course form carries an awful lot of weight.
His best efforts have come on Good to Firm ground. On the first day, the ground was officially Good, but the times were coming in pretty quick for most of the races, so hopefully Billyjoh will enjoy the conditions! The forecast looks dry and I’m hoping it will dry up more, but I am conscious there is talk of watering…
Finally, I also like the retention of Tom Marquand in the saddle, as he has a strong record riding for Michael Appleby. So far this season, Tom has had fifteen rides for Michael, which have resulted in four wins (27%) and a further four places (53%). Hopefully he can continue that fine form for us today!
Considering his best form has come at Goodwood, he’s handicapped to strike, and he has followed the same path where he had strong results last year, Billyjoh must be of interest today. Especially considering the double figure price on offer with bet365!
However, he does need to bounce back from the lesser run at Ascot, he needs to overcome a wide draw in stall fourteen, and he is becoming a real bridesmaid type. With those facts taken into account, I’m trimming the stakes down to 0.75pt each way.
Below you will find some of our recommended bookmakers and the great free bet offers that they currently have available. There is plenty of value to be had by using these deals, so make sure you take a good look at the bookmakers that you do not currently use!
