As we head into the weekend there is a huge day of racing to get stuck into on Saturday. The top Flat action is happening at Newmarket and Newbury and I have put together five big betting tips for you to take a look at. The highlight of the day is the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes, where we have a fascinating duel just waiting to happen, plus four other races where I think my picks are ready for the winner’s enclosure.
We have a huge weekend ahead of us and my bookie choice is BritainBet, who have a fantastic sign up offer up for grabs. If you
bet £25, you’ll get £50 in free bets. It’s a very fair deal for a big Saturday and their odds are very competitive too!
My first betting tip for Saturday comes in the Jennings Handicap at Newmarket and I’ve spotted a standout runner in this field. Gressington, for the Ed Bethell yard, would need to improve a fair bit to win this in my opinion. He looked a nice sort last season, but was well beaten on the all-weather at Southwell last month, which does not give me confidence in this more competitive race.
The one I fancy to get the job done here is the John Gosden filly, So Logical, who won nicely last time out at Newcastle. She was a little slow getting into stride, but finished her race very strongly. I think she can improve past all of these, despite this being her first attempt on a fast surface and she looks a really nice filly to go forward with.
Over to Newbury next, where we have a decent bunch of three-year-olds running in the Carnarvon Stakes. Pocklington is a nice looking type for Geoff Oldroyd, and at a double figure price I can see him outrunning his odds for sure. He is a strong traveller who found plenty to win on both starts to date, so don't be surprised to see him well supported on the day.
James Delight is a nice course and distance winner, and he is probably the most solid runner in the race. However, if they all turn up in form, I think this goes to the William Haggas runner, Relief Rally, who wouldn’t even need to improve to win this in my opinion. She was smart as a juvenile, and her seasonal debut here last month will put her spot on for this. With the current fast conditions I think she will be a tough nut to crack and there is plenty of value in her 4/1 price tag.
In this seven furlong Handicap, the Dark Angel gelding, Divina Libra, sets a decent standard after winning in good fashion 10 days ago at Chester. He is more than entitled to build on that performance, and he should prefer this track, so there’s no reason he won’t run well again here. That said, I’ve decided to take him on with the Charlie Fellowes runner, Gorak.
He ran really well over course and distance a month ago, and he looks like there is more to come from him off the back of that. He was a front runner that day and was beaten late on, so
with a slightly more patient ride, he should go very close off a mark of 95. It would be no surprise to see him build on that latest start and he should be heavily involved here at the business end.
The London Gold Cup Handicap is always a competitive race and this renewal is no different. Chanrtilly heads the betting for Ballydoyle, after an impressive win at Leopardstown last month and he looks a solid option. This trip obviously suits him well and he is entitled to improve again. It will take a good performance to stop him in my opinion. King's Gambit has been well supported, but he needs to prove he has the stamina to stay the extra quarter mile, and even if he does, he will also need to improve a fair bit to beat the favourite.
The one that interests me the most is
Goodwood Odyssey
for David Menuisier. This is a horse who has bags of stamina and is almost certain to improve for the longer trip and the experience.
He ran a great race last time out at Sandown, where he won comfortably and he is open to plenty more. I think he has a huge chance of taking down the Ballydoyle favourite here.
Now is the moment we’ve all been waiting for, the much anticipated clash between Inspiral and Big Rock in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes. Inspiral is now a six-time Group 1 winner and a seriously class filly over a mile, but she has the French ace Big Rock in the line up looking to get in her way. Inspiral currently heads the betting at 15/8. She doesn’t have any flaws worth mentioning and she is likely to be popular, but it’s worth taking account of the fact that this her first start of the season.
Anyway, I’m having my best bet of the day on her rival, Big Rock. He is rated 7lbs higher than Inspiral and is just about weighted right to win this Group 1. He is already a winner over the mile trip, and also pushed Ace Impact to three lengths this time last year, which sets a very high standard indeed. I would love to see Inspiral take this, but ultimately, I think Big Rock will prove too good for her.
