It was fantastic to add another winner to my record for Betting.co.uk with Sweet William landing our 2pt Win bet in the Doncaster Cup Stakes yesterday. As per my article on him, I felt even money was a fair price and he should have really been a shade off odds on. I tipped him at 6/4 but he ended up going off at 10/11 and won very well. That’s another 3pts of profit in the pot!
If you are just reading my articles for the first time, I’m the resident horse racing tipster here at Betting.co.uk. You’ll find me writing five articles per week for the site and whilse these are mostly daily betting tips, I also provide other content such as antepost tips, guides and big race trends.
In terms of antepost bets, I have several live at the time of writing. The next of which is due to run in the Irish Champion Stakes today! I then have one for the Cesarewitch Handicap next month and the King George VI Chase in December. I have even looked ahead to the 2026 Cheltenham Festival and the Aintree Grand National. If you haven’t already read them, I’d certainly recommend that you check them out. Sweet William, who won for us yesterday, was the latest antepost bet to run and we also had Ethical Diamond at 10/1 for the Ebor Handicap last month!
At the time of writing, bet365 is one of only three bookmakers offering 12/1 on Be Frank, and one of only two offering four places. In addition to that, they have a fantastic sign up offer. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. Great all round value
Be Frank was arguably an unlucky loser the last time he ran here and with more luck in-running today, I think he’ll massively outrun his odds of 12/1. There are also other angles for this bet today and in this article, I’ll be breaking them down for you.
Back in July, Be Frank was a huge eye-catcher over this C&D. He was slowly away and he subsequently had to race in the rear of the field, which is usually disadvantageous at Chester. In addition to that, you tend to want to be sticking to the inner rail and he had to come very wide to make his challenge.
Considering not much more could have gone wrong for him, he produced a huge finishing effort to pass many rivals in order to finish third. He was beaten less than two lengths at the line and I think he did extremely well in the circumstances. With a better start and a kinder run around the bend, he surely would have gone close to winning.
That run came off a mark of 75 and he comes back to try again off a 1lb lower mark of 74!
Given he was slowly away on that previous run here in July, I find it interesting that they apply a first time visor today. You would assume this is in the hope that he’ll be more alert when the stalls open and he’ll also be able to both find a stronger position throughout the race and also be able to maintain it.
If the visor can enable him to break away quicker from the stalls and to also be in a better position throughout the race, he must have every chance of running a huge race. Especially when you consider how he finished his race over C&D in July, and with the slightly lower mark this time around.
To be frank (pun intended), I’m not a huge fan of Edward Greatrex. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I checked his record for the Ian Williams stable. He has had twelve rides to date, three of which have won and a further three have finished in the first four. Therefore, he has a strike rate of 25% and for the finishing in the first four home, it increases to 50%.
That is quite an eye-catching record, albeit with a limited sample size. If you backed his twelve rides to a £1 level stake, you’d be sitting on a profit of +£10.75, which is also impressive. Whilst he had given some of my previous bets poor rides in the past, you have to take emotion out of your betting and judging him on his record for Ian, he looks solid. In addition to that, I think Ian is a shrewd operator and if he has faith in Edward, I’m willing to have faith in him today as well. I’m always happy to be proved wrong, especially when it wins me money!
When you consider the previous course form, the fact he has that course experience under his belt now and how much went wrong that day, you would have to be hopeful of a big run today. When you combine into that the fact that he’s 1lb lower, he gets the first time Visor and Edward’s strong record in the saddle for the yard, you can build a very strong case for Be Frank today.
The main concern comes from the fact he can blow a little hot and cold. That said, he’s been pretty consistent in his last four starts. His latest win came on his reappearance off a mark of 70 and since then he’s been racing off marks between 75 to 77 on his last seven starts and has been unable to win which is worrying. Whilst you have to go back as far as June 2023, he has actually won off as high as 79, so he is certainly capable off a mark of 74 at his best. He has actually placed off as high as 84 and that was more recently in May 2024.
With all of the positives in his favour today, I think he is certainly overpriced at 12/1 and I think combining that price with the four places on offer makes him a fantastic each way bet today. However, given the fact he can blow hot and cold and that he has failed to build on his reappearance win in his last seven starts, I’m only prepared to play half stakes on this one. I’m hoping in the first time Visor he can break stronger and hold a better position through the race and if so, we know he has the finishing effort to be dangerous. Like I said, I hope Edward Greatrex can prove me wrong about his ability in the saddle!
