Betting Tips - Saturday 16 August 2025 - Newbury

Publish Date: 16/08/2025

Key Points
  • Today’s betting tip has incredible form in the book
  • He has returned to form in his last two starts
  • He followed the same path last year

Well what can I say about this week - two daily tips, two winners! First we had Whathappensinvegas winning at 9/1 and then Cancan In The Rain danced in at 10/3, albeit with a 20p Rule 4 applied. As we kick started August with a 12/1 winner in the shape of Rhoscolyn, we now have three winners from the last four daily tips. We actually ended July with a 10/1 winner, Intervention, so it’s four from the last five! Hopefully we can continue this fine form today and land the hat trick this week.

As the resident horse racing tipster for betting.co.uk, I produce four articles each week on average. They can be daily tips like this one, antepost tips or even other types of content such as guides and big race trends. As a result, hopefully there is something for everyone here!

If you are interested in antepost betting tips, be sure to check out the ones I have already posted: the York Ebor Handicap, the St Leger, the King George VI Chase, 2026 Cheltenham Festival and the 2026 Aintree Grand National. By being quick and taking the early prices, you can obtain the best value!

Betting advice

  • 15:00 Newbury - Jumby @ 5/1 (3 places, ¼ odds) - 0.5pt each way

William Hill is the best place to back Jumby

William Hill has smashed it today. First, they are offering the joint best price of 5/1 on Jumby. Second, they have changed the standard ⅕ odds for each way to ¼, to offer better value. Finally, they have a fantastic sign up offer If you bet £10, you’ll get £40 in free bets. This is not a deal to overlook unless you already have an account there!

Jumby can end his losing spell today!

Today’s betting tip hasn’t had a win since 10 June 2023, and while this might put many off, I believe Jumby is ready to strike today. In this article, I’ll explain why I think this, so make sure you read on to understand my viewpoint.

Jumby has incredible form in the book

At his peak, Jumby was a serious racehorse. His Group 2 victory in the Hungerford Stakes in 2022 saw him with a rating of 112. His Group honours didn’t end there either, as he also picked up a Group 3 at Haydock the following summer.

Those wins came when he was four and five years of age, and he is now a seven-year-old. Whilst he’s not the horse he once was, he still retains an awful lot of ability and I think he has more wins to come in his career - Hopefully starting today!

Jumby has returned to form in his last two starts and can make it third time lucky!

Last year, Jumby competed at this meeting off a mark of 100, and by September his mark had risen to 109 again. However, after a modest start to this year’s campaign, his mark has tumbled from an opening mark of 105, down to just 94, which is a huge 11lb drop in weight.

On his penultimate start he went to Haydock and ran over 7f on Good ground. Although he ran a huge race, he only managed to finish in third, as he was repeatedly denied a clear run. I believe that performance deserves marking up significantly.

Last time out, he went to Newmarket, where he ran another very strong race to place third. Again, I think this could be marked up, as he raced towards the rear of the field in a race where it paid to be prominent. The handicapper left him alone for that performance, and to me, that seems very generous.

Jumby followed the same path last year and performed well at this meeting

Last season, Jumby went to Newmarket on 10 August, where he finished third off a mark of 100, producing a RPR of 107. He was back out again just seven days later at Newbury, off the same mark of 100, again finishing third and producing a slightly improved RPR of 108.

I find it very interesting that almost exactly a year on, Jumby has followed the same path. He raced at Newmarket a week ago, and is now competing here at Newbury.

It is also worth noting that last year’s run at this meeting was in the Dubai Duty Free Cup Stakes (Listed Race) and it came on unfavourable Soft ground. Whereas today, he races in a 0-100 Handicap, which is a much easier task. After having excuses in his last two races, and showing that he’s in great form, I think Jumby could make it third time lucky here.

Can Jumby return to winning ways?

With such strong historic form in the book, a return to form in his last couple of starts, and the fact that Jumby has followed the same path as previously, I think he has a massive chance in this 0-100 Handicap. His chance increases further with the Good to Firm going being in his favour.

On the flip side, he is seven now, he is winless since June 2023 and I’m also concerned that there isn’t a clear front runner in this field, which leaves a lingering question over whether there will be a genuine gallop. Considering the positives, Jumby has to be a bet at an each way price of 5/1. However, given the negatives highlighted, I’m only playing half stakes on this one.
