Well what a week it has been! From my three betting tips I found two winners - Lord Erskine on Tuesday at 12/1, and Rocking Ends at 2/1 on Friday. Furthermore, my Thursday selection, The Flying Poet, managed to achieve a second place for us at 5/1. I have one final pick for you this week, and this one runs Cartmel. He is trading at a juicy double-figure price currently, so hopefully we can end this sensational punting week with a bang!
If you’re new here, I post four betting tips most weeks, but you’ll sometimes find other types of content too, including guides, big race trends and antepost picks. By the way, don’t forget to check out my antepost selections for the 2025 St Leger, 2026 Cheltenham Festival and the 2026 Aintree Grand National to grab some early prices.
The majority of the bookmakers have Wbee priced at 16/1, with some going as short as 14/1. However, bet365 stand out from the crowd at 20/1 and I’d highly recommend backing him there, especially as there are also four places on offer for each way terms. The value doesn’t stop there though, any new customers who deposit and bet £10, will get £30 of free bets. That’s excellent all round value right here!
There are many reasons why I think Wbee can outrun his huge odds today, and in this article, I’ll explain my thinking process.
Cartmel is quite a unique track, and course form is very important here. Therefore, it’s no surprise I very much like that Wbee has a phenomenal record at this track.
His record here is two wins and one place from four runs. That said, his first run can be ignored as it was in a 2m 1f Novice Hurdle, which was an inadequate trip that was never going to suit him.
Wbee’s latest run here, saw him in third place, but only beaten by just one length, which is hugely eye-catching, especially as he made a mistake at a crucial stage and needed to race wide as a result. But let’s not forget that his two previous runs here both resulted in a win!
Although his latest win was all the way back in May 2022, it came off a 3lb higher mark of 131. It is also interesting to note that his prior win was off today’s mark of 128. He has also finished second off a mark as high as 135 too, so we certainly know he’s more capable off a mark of 128.
Considering his recent third here could be marked up, he must have a strong chance off just 1lb higher than that mark.
Wbee’s third place here two runs back came in a hot Class 2 Handicap, but today he drops down to Class 3. However, because of that, he must carry the top weight of 12st. But at least that’s for a good reason. It means that in the handicapper’s opinion, he is the best horse in the race.
I also find it interesting that his trainer, Gary Hanmer, has booked 7lb claimer Lewis Saunders to ride. There are always risks involved with bringing in a less-experienced jockey, but that 7lb claim brings Wbee’s weight down to just 11st 7lb, which is much more manageable.
It is worth noting that Lewis Saunders has had 103 rides over Jumps in Great Britain over the last 5 years, so he isn’t completely inexperienced. In addition to that, he has won 18 of them, which is a pretty impressive strike rate of 17% for a 7lb claimer. A further 27 of his rides - 45 out of 103 - have finished in the first four, meaning a huge 44% strike rate. Let’s put it this way, if you had backed all of his 103 rides at a £1 level stake, you’d be showing a profit of +£4.60!
For me, Wbee is underestimated and overpriced at 20/1. He loves it up here at Cartmel, he’s handicapped to strike, and the drop in Class, along with the 7lb claimer booked could well be a recipe for success.
On the flip side, he is a 10-year-old now, so he’s not getting any younger. It is also worth noting that he drops in trip here to 2m 6f. He will either want to have a strong gallop, or he needs to be ridden much more positively than normal in order to use his stamina. Given he is wearing cheekpieces for the first time, the latter could be the plan.
He needs to bounce back from a poor run last time out, as well as handling a sharp 10-day turnaround, especially as he is a horse that has a strong record fresh. All elements considered, I’m only playing half stakes on this one. But at 20/1 with four places on offer, I do feel he is well worth an each way bet.
