We are staying at Ayr today for the Ayr Silver Cup! We had the Ayr Bronze Cup yesterday but today we have the Ayr Silver Cup and the big one - The Ayr Gold Cup. Whilst a few caught my eye in both races, it’s a horse in the former that my bet for today.
If you’re just discovering me and/or my articles for the first time, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing tipster for Betting.co.uk. I produce five articles per week for them which are all free to access. The majority of the articles are daily betting tips, but occasionally you'll see antepost tips, guides and big race trends too.
Speaking of antepost tips, I already have some live for Betting.co.uk. In the rest of 2025, I have selections for the Cesarewitch Handicap and the King George VI Chase. Then in 2026, I have selections for the Cheltenham Festival and Aintree Grand National. I also provide more tips on my Discord server on a subscription basis - more details on that at the bottom of the article.
At the time of writing, bet365 are offering great price and place terms for Silky Wilkie today. They have him available at 14/1, and the are paying to six places for this race. The value doesn’t stop there either, they also have a fantastic sign up offer for new customers. If you bet £10, you’ll get £30 in free bets. This is not a deal to overlook unless you already have an account there!
After a busy winter, Silky Wilkie was given a break of 127 days. His reappearance run came at York earlier this month, and he was a huge eye-catcher. If building on that, he has to be a big player in this Ayr Silver Cup. In this article, I’ll be breaking down what else draws me to him today.
As touched upon, Silky Wilkie returned from a 127-day absence just under two weeks ago at York in the Sky Bet Super Sub Sprint Handicap. You couldn’t help but be impressed with how he travelled into the race easily and he certainly looked the winner over 2f out. He led over 1f out but he was headed inside the final 110yds, weakening towards the finish.
Given the fact he lacked a recent outing, I think that was a superb effort. That was pure ability that got him as far as it did and then I feel it was the lack of a recent run that hampered his finishing effort. If he was race fit, I feel he simply would have won that race at York.
The handicapper could have been cruel and put him up for that but he’s been generous and dropped him 1lb from 86 to 85. However, as the weights come out early for this race, he stays on an unaltered mark of 86 for this. If he travels with the same zest but delivers a stronger finishing effort now that he has the run under his belt, I think he will run a huge race off 86.
The Ayr Silver Cup is actually a consolation race for the Ayr Gold Cup which is run an hour later. Last year, Silky Wilkie contested in the Ayr Gold Cup, and placed second in an unbelievable 1-2-3 for Karl Burke. That came off a mark of 99.
12 months on, Silky Wilkie has dropped a stone in the handicap, and races off 13lb lower here in the Ayr Silver Cup. Likewise his latest win (albeit back in April 2023) also came off a mark of 99, producing a monster RPR of 114.
He can run in and out, hot and cold or whatever you wish to call it. However, you only have to look back to February to find a race where he has produced a fantastic performance. That one came at Lingfield on the AW where he produced a RPR of 96 when denied 1.25 lengths in second. He is simply too well handicapped to ignore, off his reduced mark of 86.
The second most important thing after the horse is the jockey of course. We certainly won’t lack in that department as Clifford Lee rides Silky Wilkie today.
Clifford is in electric form and if you’re not familiar with his riding over the last fortnight, I’ll fill you in now! Across the last 14 days, he has ridden 11 winners from 44 rides, which is a very impressive strike rate of 25%. Even more impressive is that he rode four winners at this meeting yesterday, for two different trainers.
That takes his record to five wins from his last ten runs, which cannot be overlooked. Especially when the majority of those winners were ridden at this track just yesterday. Clifford Lee certainly knows how to win these big Handicaps at Ayr , after all he won the biggest one of them all last year, The Ayr Gold Cup, aboard Lethal Levi.
I think Silky Wilkie has a fantastic chance of landing this fantastic race. If his last run was anything to go by, he will be in great form, he’s handicapped to strike and he has proven he can perform at this track. There is an awful lot to like, especially when you add Clifford Lee into the mix.
On the flip side, he hasn’t fallen in the handicap over the last 12 months for no reason. The fact is, he can blow hot and cold. He is also on a losing run of 31 races dating back to 8 April 2023, which is concerning. In his defence though, he has gone close on numerous occasions during that time, recording ten top three finishes!
Does he have the ability to win this race? Yes.
Does he have risks attached? Yes.
As a result, he is just a half stakes bet for me but at a price of 14/1 with six places on offer, I feel that he is well worth playing. Hopefully he can break that losing run by building on his very promising performance at York.
Below you will see some of the fantastic free bet offers currently available from our recommended bookmaker brands. Make sure to check them out, there’s a lot of value to be had from these deals, and so many free bet deals you could use this weekend!
