After a huge Newcastle winner yesterday that returned 19.6pts in the form of Wyld Bill, I’m back with another selection from the same racecourse. You may recall that I put up an antepost tip for The Northumberland Plate at the beginning of the month, and today, we’re going to target the consolation race - The Northumberland Vase. This is a 2m 0.5f Handicap and I think I’ve found one that is underestimated in the market.
As well as multiple betting tips each week, you’ll find other types of content from me too. Keep a lookout for my guides, big race trends, and antepost picks. Be sure to check out my antepost selections for the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, and the 2026 Aintree Grand National too. As mentioned, The Northumberland Plate is also being run today at Newcastle (15.15) and while the early price of 33/1 I originally advised is long gone, he’s still worth a go at the current 11/1 available.
After reading my logic behind the bet, if you are looking to back Sheradann, I’d recommend doing so with Betfred. They are offering 12/1 with 5 places, the joint best price available. In addition to that, they have a great deal for new customers too. If you bet £10, they’ll give you £50 of free bets. That’s great value all round!
Sheradann was bought from France, and he was not a cheap purchase at €250,000. With a record of 0 out of 9 in the UK since, he is starting to look very expensive! That said, there have been plenty of positives and I’m sure if he wins the Northumberland Vase, his owners will be very happy. I think he has a great chance of doing exactly that and in this article, I’ll explain why.
Sheradann won the final three of his five starts over in France and was subsequently sold for €250,000. After assessing that French form, the British Handicapper decided he was worthy of an opening mark of 94. However, he struggled on the Turf at that mark with form figures of 0709. With a combination of that mark falling to 87, switching to the AW and likely acclimatising to British racing, Sheradann was fantastic at Kempton in November and December.
The initial run was a third in a qualifier for the London Stayers’ Series Final and he was only denied half a length there. Sheradann and the winner from that qualifier then went on to finish 1-2 in the valuable Series Final itself, with Sheradann denied just half a length off a 1lb higher mark of 88.
Judging him on those two runs at Kempton, where Sheradann produced RPRs of 94 and 95 off marks of 87 and 88, I think he is certainly capable of being very competitive in today’s race off a mark of 86!
It was slightly worrying that after a 151-day break, Sheradann could only finish 7th and 6th on his first two starts of this new campaign, producing RPRs of just 82 and 76. However, I think he did have excuses for those runs as the former was over an inadequate trip of 1m4.5f and the latter was on unsuitable Good ground.
Therefore, it was nice to see him put those two runs behind him switched to softer ground at Goodwood over a 2m trip. He ran a cracker there to finish 3rd, beaten just 2.5 lengths producing a strong RPR of 92 off his mark of 86. That performance was just about perfect with today’s race in mind as he was strong enough to show he’s back to form but beaten far enough to keep his mark unaltered on 86.
Sheradann showed plenty of stamina in his French days with two wins over 1m7f on Soft ground. In the former win he kept on well from the rear of the field to lead late on and in the latter run, he made all.
He has only backed up that stamina with his two solid runs at Kempton over 2m where he was staying on in both and more recently, he kept on at Goodwood last time.
2m0.5f around a stiff track like Newcastle is a real stamina test and especially as with a big field and valuable prize money on the line, they are likely to go a very strong gallop today. I think Sheradann will have the pace to sit in behind the leaders comfortably but also have the stamina to power home at the finish. When others are crying no more, I think he’ll be knuckling down to run into the frame and hopefully passing them all to land the win.
All elements considered, I think Sheradann has an excellent chance in the Northumberland Vase today. I have no doubt that he is well treated off a mark of 86 and that mark should see him very competitive at least. With the Goodwood run under his belt, we know he is in great form in himself as well. With that Series Final second at Kempton, he has been threatening to land a big pot for his connections and I think he can do that here.
On the flip side, there are a couple of negatives and they have to be factored in to appreciate the full picture. Firstly, he does have to shoulder a hefty weight of 9st 11lb here. Secondly, he isn’t yet fully proven on the Tapeta surface that Newcastle uses. He has run here before and whilst it was an underwhelming performance, it was over an inadequate trip, so that may well have simply been the reason. Is it just coincidence that he ran at Newcastle for the first run of this campaign or was he just having a tester on the surface ahead of today’s race and to give him experience of the track? Ian Williams is a shrewd operator and this could well have been a long term plan.
At 12/1 with 5 places being paid, I think he is certainly superb value for an each way bet. However, given the negatives raised, I’m only prepared to play half stakes on this one. It is also a big field of 19 here, so you will naturally need plenty of luck in-running, especially from a draw of Stall 12. Hopefully we can follow up Wyld Bill’s win today with Sheradann and then the antepost bet on the Northumberland Plate can land a Newcastle treble for us this weekend!
