  • My runner-by-runner guide and 1-2-3 verdict for the 2024 Irish Derby up next!

Three top tips from Saturday’s cards

Slight change of plan for my Saturday betting tips. It was a tough call, but I’ve decided to stay in the UK for Saturday’s racing, rather than heading off to the Curragh. And the reason for that is because I’ve got three really cracking selections for you to get stuck into.

I have two EW betting tips for Newcastle where the highlight race of the day is the 20-runner Northumberland Plate and I have a big price each way fancy for that one. Later in the afternoon, my NAP of the day runs in the Group 3 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket and he really is worth a watch.

Then on Sunday, we’ll definitely be off to the Curragh for the spectacle that is the 2024 Irish Derby. And on that note, I’ll have a runner-by-runner guide and 1-2-3 verdict ready for you to check out very soon.

14:04 Newcastle - Jenningsbet Stakes (Group 3) 6f - Cold Case (EW)

My first selection of the day runs in the Group 3, where Kinross is a clear favourite on his seasonal return. He sets a very good standard as a multiple Group 1 winner, but he has been pulled out multiple times this season already, and that does give me a few reservations about his fitness. He is clearly the best horse in the race on paper, but his record fresh also poses a big question.

Spycatcher should run well for the Karl Burke team, and has guaranteed fitness on his side, but I’m more intrigued by the stable's second string, Cold Case. He is only a four-year-old and takes on more experienced horses, but he already has a rating of 110 and shouldn’t need to improve much to get heavily involved here. In addition, he was a Group 3 winner at Newbury last year, and it’s unlikely that we have seen the best of him just yet. He should be ready to go first time out and the form he has on this faster surface looks very strong to me.

15:10 Newcastle - Northumberland Plate Handicap 2m - Howth (EW)

The big Handicap race of the day is the 20-runner Northumberland Plate. Trooper Bisdee is the current favourite for Sir Mark Prescott and he looks really well-handicapped. However, he runs under a penalty after winning last time out at Pontefract and has no experience in a big field race like this. The Prescott team also run the very consistent True Legend, who is a previous course winner. He ran very well at Goodwood on his first attempt at 1m 6f and was only beaten by a very narrow margin. But he isn’t bred to stay this far and another 4 furlongs up in trip in a race like this will surely find him out.

So, the one I’m going for is Mick Appleby’s Howth. He stayed on very well here over the extended 2m last time out and he could still have improvement to come over this trip. He travels well enough through his races, and if he had been given a better ride tactically last time out, he may well have been closer to the winner. Nevertheless, it was a very respectable effort for his first attempt at this trip and it would be no surprise to see him take a step forward off the back of it. His mark of 88 could still be lenient, and as a strong finisher, he gets my vote for an each way punt.

15:25 Newmarket - Criterion Stakes (Group 3) 7f - Noble Dynasty (NAP)

Over at Newmarket we have the Group 3 Criterion Stakes which looks a fascinating contest despite having only six runners. Tiber Flow returned to peak form last time out and it would be good to see him run another big race here but he has to give weight all round to a smart field of horses. Pogo is a cracking little horse who is sure to go well and he really interests me, but he isn’t getting any younger and may need to find a little bit too much to win here. Meanwhile, Nostrum has been a little disappointing for Juddmonte.

So, by a process of elimination, I’ll be siding with Noble Dynasty for the Godolphin team. He is a very nicely bred six-year-old by Dubawi and he looks to me like he is still very much on an upward curve. He beat English Oak last time out, who went onto frank that form at Royal Ascot, which leaves Noble Dynasty very well-treated here. This is highly likely to become something of a tactical race, but Noble Dynasty won’t mind that at all, and on these terms, I think he will prove very difficult to beat.
