We returned to winning ways yesterday as Tronido made all and bolted in, at a lovely price of 8/1. He was well-supported into 5/1 at the off, but he won the race like an odds on shot. August has been another fantastic month for the tips, and hopefully we can see it out with a bang today with the 14/1 selection I’ve got lined up for you!

Just to recap, mainly for those who are reading my articles for the first time, I’m RacingGav and I’m the resident horse racing tipster here at Betting.co.uk. At a reduced mark, Coeur d’Or can regain his crown!

I think Coeur d’Or has a massive chance in today’s race and his current price of 14/1 looks far too big to me. I have several reasons to think he should be shorter in the market, and in this article, I’ll go through them for you.

Coeur d’Or won this race in 2023, and finished a close fourth in 2024

Back in 2023, Coeur d’Or came here for the Irish Cambridgeshire. He stayed on very strongly, taking the lead towards the finish. That run came under Chris Hayes and it was off a mark of 97. Notably, that win came straight off the back of winning the Colm Quinn BMW Mile Handicap at the Galway Festival at the beginning of the month, off a mark of 92.

Despite not winning in his six runs between the 2023 and 2024 renewals of this race, Coeur d’Or came back to defend his title off a 3lb higher mark of 100. He ran another huge race, and although he didn’t win, he was beaten by less than two lengths at the line. Once again, that run came under his regular rider, Chris Hayes.

Coeur d’Or’s proven over C&D and has dropped to his last winning mark

Away from the previous renewals of this race, Coeur d’Or has a pretty strong record over C&D, with his form figures reading 43210445. Considering the calibre and depth of the Handicaps he often runs in, I think it is mighty impressive to have only been out of the first five on one occasion. Incidentally, that was a rare off day where the jockey reported that he was never travelling.

Coeur d’Or’s latest three runs (445) have come off marks of 100, 100 and 99 respectively. It is also worth noting that he was only beaten 1.75 lengths, 2.75 lengths and 2.75 lengths in those three runs. Therefore, back down to a mark of 97, he must have a strong chance of going very close in this renewal of the Irish Cambridgeshire. Today’s mark of 97 is now the same as he won the 2023 renewal with, and hopefully that is a good omen.

His yard have won two of the last six renewals of this race

Trainers are very much creatures of habit, and they like to target the same races time and time again. This is something that I have touched on many times before and we are seeing it again here. Coeur d’Or’s trainer, D K Weld, has won two of the last six renewals of this race, with the 2023 winner being Coeur d’Or. As well as these two winners, he had Crystal Black in sixth back in 2021, and Coeur d’Or in fourth place in 2024. It therefore comes as no surprise that he is targeting this race again with Coeur d’Or.

I also find it noteworthy that D K Weld has decided to fit a first time visor on Coeur d’Or tomorrow, in addition to his usual tongue tie. To my eye, he raced quite keenly last time out, and that was part of the reason for his poor run. Although I was quite surprised to see a visor fitted, connections must feel it will help him to focus, so I’ll trust their opinion on that one!

Can Coeur d’Or repeat his 2023 victory in this race?

For me, there are plenty of positives on the list for Coeur d’Or in today’s race. We know he loves the 1m trip around the Curragh, and he has performed particularly well in the last two renewals of this race. He’s pretty versatile in terms of going, but Good ground would be ideal, and it looks like we’ll have that, or ground just on the softer side of Good at least. With Coeur d’Or now falling to his last winning mark, he must have an exceptional chance of being competitive here. The first time visor is an unexpected move from the trainer, but if it brings out the best in him, he should run a huge race!

In terms of the negatives for Coeur d’Or, he hasn't won since the 2023 renewal of this race, making a total of ten consecutive losses. That said, it’s worth noting that he has run many strong races in defeat during that time. The weather is also a slight concern today, as there is some rain due today. It’s always tough to predict the weather but the forecast I use suggests around 5mm between 07:00 to 15:00, which hopefully won’t have too much impact on the going.

However, the last two times it has gone soft, they have pulled Coeur d’Or out, due to “unsuitable ground”, so I’d be worried if a lot of rain fell, as they may declare him a non-runner if so. You could also argue that his draw in stall 15 is very wide, but he is usually held up in the rear of the field anyway. I’m pretty sweet on Coeur d’Or’s chances, but as there are some negatives, I will trim the stake down to 0.75pt each way. At the current price of 14/1, I think he is well worth a bet.
